Pope Formosus is but one of the many Popes who have consecrated Bishops for the English Church. Of these Papal consecrations, a documented succession from the following can be traced in the present English episcopate.
NICHOLAS II on the 15th April 1061 consecrated Giso, Bishop of Wells, who was one of the consecrators of Lanfranc in 1070 (see main list).
CALIXTUS II on the 19th October 1119 consecrated Thurstan as Archbishop of York, who on the 12th April 1125 was one of the consecrators of Seffrid Pelochin as Bishop of Chichester, who on the 24th May 1125 was one of the consecrators of Simon, Bishop of Worcester, who on the 8th January 1139 was one of the consecrators of Theobald as Archbishop of Canterbury, who on the 5th September 1148 consecrated Gilbet Foliot as Bishop of Hereford, who on the 7th November 1176 consecrated Peter de leia as Bishop of St. Davids (see main list).
ANASTASIUS IV on the 20th December 1153 consecrated Hugh de Puiset as Bishop of Durham, who on the 22nd October 1189 was one of the consecrators of Hubert Walter as Bishop of Salisbury, who on the 23rd May 1199 consecrated William de Sainte Mere l'Eglise as Bishop of London (see main list).
ALEXANDER III on the 7th April 1174 consecrated Richard of Dover as Archbishop of Canterbury, who on the 10th August 1180 consecrated Baldwin as Bishop of Worcester, who on the 22nd October 1189 consecrated Hubert Walter as Bishop of Salisbury, who on the 23rd May 1199 consecrated William de Sainte Mere l'Eglise as Bishop of London (see main list).
CLEMENT III on the 19th November 1189 consecrated Bernard as Archbishop of Ragusa, who in 1199 was one of the consecrators of William de Sainte Mere l'Eglise as Bishop of London (see main list).
CELESTINE III on the 20th April 1197 consecrated Philip of Poictou as Bishop of Durham, who in 1199 was one of the consecrators of William de Sainte Mere l'Eglise as Bishop of London (see main list).
INNOCENT III on the 17th June 1207 consecrated Stephen Langton as Archbishop of Canterbury, who on the 5th October 1214 consecrated Walter de Gray as Archbishop of York (see main list).
INNOCENT IV on the 15th January 1245 consecrated Boniface of Savoy as Archbishop of Canterbury, who on the 19th September 1266 consecrated Nicholas of Ely as Bishop of Worcester, who on the 26th February 1273 consecrated Robert Kilwardby as Archbishop ofCanterbury, who on the 29th May 1278 consecrated William Middleton as Bishop of Norwich, who on the 9th January 1284 was one of the consecrators of Antony Beck as Bishop of Durham (see main list).
ALEXANDER IV on the 14th October 1257 consecrated Hugh Belsham as Bishop of Ely, who on the 26th February 1273 was one of the consecrators of Robert Kilwardby as Archbishop of Canterbury, who on the 29th May 1278 consecrated William Middleton as Bishop of Norwich, who on the 9th January 1284 was one of the consecrators of Anthony Beck as Bishop of Durham (see main list).
NICHOLAS III on the 17th September 1279 consecrated William Wickwane as Archbishop of York, who on the 9th January 1284 consecrated Antony Beck as Bishop of Durham (see main list).
GREGORY XII on the 17th June 1408 consecrated Henry Chicheley as Bishop of St. David's, who on the 26th October 1427 consecrated Robert Neville as Bishop of Salisbury, who on the 15th May 1435 was one of the consecrators of Thomas Bourchier as Bishop of Worcester (see main list).
