Fatah is harassing Christians in Bethlehem

 

Documents captured during operation "Defensive Shield" reveal that in the last couple of years the residents of Bethlehem, especially members of the Christian faith, have had to suffer with violence directed against them by the armed militias, bandits and thugs, with the members of Fatah taking an active role. The Fatah under its various aliases ("Tanzim-Fatah", 'Al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigade') consistently harasses the local population, especially the Christian population.

One of the documents captured states that the citizens of Bethlehem have lost their sense of security and began to see the Tanzim-Fatah as nothing more than armed hoodlum gangs whose only purpose was to control the local residents.

In addition, there exists a large amount of information regarding extortion, false arrests and various other forms of corruption in Bethlehem.

Following are a number of examples:

Extortion of business men and criminal activity

 

  1. Members of the "Tamra" [a Bedouin clan living in the area of Bethlehem] blackmail Christian businessmen.
  2. Following the explosion of a car belonging to Atef Abiyat, a senior Fatah operative, gold rings were found on his fingers. The rings were positively identified as belonging to Christian businessman, George Nissan, who was robbed a short while beforehand.
  3. Fatah operatives blackmail businessmen who own property assets in the city, souvenir shop owners, and gas station owners. This criminal activity is done with clear collaboration with the Palestinian Security Services. The security services frequently summon the Christian businessmen for 'inquiry', on charges of supposed collaboration with Israel, and then share the money which is given in exchange for closing the 'file' on them.

Seizing Christian Land

  1. Muslim factions, elements in the Palestinian Authority, as well as private elements, have increased the takeover of land belonging to the Greek Orthodox Church in Bethlehem. They use any means necessary to achieve their objectives including the forgery of documents, and the bribery of officials.
  2. In one incident, a plot of land in Bethlehem was seized with the aid of a "Force 17" commander in order to build a mosque on it. The "Force 17" commander claimed that this was done on Arafat's order. Appeals to Jibril and Haj Ismayael to intervene and stop the construction work went unheeded.

     

No provision of legal aid to Christians in Bethlehem

 

  1. The Christians in Bethlehem are not provided with legal aid. The judicial system there is corrupt and the verdicts are often influenced. The lack of legal aid is quite noticeable in the cases of Christian landowners and property owners whose land is taken over by Muslim immigrants from Hebron. For example, the Komsiya family (a Christian family) owns a piece of land and a building used as a commercial center in town. A number of years ago a Muslim family from Hebron took over the building and began to use it without authorization. The Komsiya family turned to the Palestinian justice system and after lengthy deliberation the court ruled in favor of the plaintiffs. However, the verdict was never enforced, and the family from Hebron appeared with a new verdict (signed by the same judge) canceling the pervious verdicts and awarding ownership of the property to the family from Hebron.

    Complaints about the utter lack of security, which prevails in Bethlehem, have been passed on more than one occasion, to Arafat. Arafat was asked to rule on them, however, the documents discovered indicate that Arafat and factors in the Palestinian Authority refused to take a stand. They refused to take a clear stance to return a state of law and order to the town of Bethlehem.

The Palestinian Authority needs to stop being afraid of Christianity. If they were not afraid of it, they would not be afraid to be exposed to the ideas of Christianity.
