Comment to us:
"Too bad there isn't a Greek manuscript that is the either TR or the (alleged) Majority Text or the Nestle-Aland ... but such a one does not exist."
XOFC Responds:
The way God meant it to be
In only the narrowest sense, we roughly agree with this. But there are reasons.
There is no ONE Manuscript (in Koine Greek) that is a T.R. Manuscript in the
sense of one complete from Matthew to Revelation. However, there are thousands
of Koine Greek Manuscripts of the New Testament that each verify the other, and
affirm the accuracy of the historic Textus Receptus.
The reason Why “such a one” does not exist is because although there are
more than 5000 manuscripts that are part of the Koine Greek New Testament text,
there are very few that are comprehensive from “cover to
cover”, that can date so far back to 2000 years. Therefore, by
definition of lacking a complete N.T. written in Koine Greek within 200 years of
Jesus, then this Greek text from cover to cover does not exist. Most of the
Ancient Greek Manuscripts are partial copies of the New Testament.
But that does not mean that those manuscripts which we do have do not attest to
the reality of some verses, and to the falseness of other texts. And that little
point is the very point that liberal (& unsaved) textual critics always want
to stress. They want to teach that because the Word of God is found in many
Bible Manuscripts rather than simply one, that this means that no one can figure
out what the original texts were.
But the situation relating to texts is not nearly that complicated. Science and
archeology and papyrology continue to speak loudly about which New Testament texts
in Greek are the
real ones and which ones are the fraudulent ones. The Text of the Bible found in
the majority of those Greek manuscripts is the text of the King James Bible. This is not nearly
as difficult as textual critics like to suggest or imply.
The vast majority of Greek Manuscripts found so far (more than 99%) continue to support the Textus Receptus, and this applies to manuscripts found Since (After) the translation of the KJV.
Manuscripts found today continue to support the Textus Receptus/Genuine Majority Text, of which the King James is the best representation in English.
We know what the Bible is today. We know what the original manuscripts said
because they have been recopied thousands of times and we have thousands of
copies. And we also know what is the nature of the changes that were made on a
verse-by-verse basis. This being the case, we know that the Textus Receptus
(despite the cases attempted by Westcott/Hort, Nestle Aland and others) of
Stephens/Elzevier agrees with more than 95% of the manuscripts in Greek that
exist.
Now that is not a formula for a Lack of Knowing what the Bible is. It is simply
that those who have specifically anti-Christian theology have a desire to change
the Bible into another text. We could all complicate this by a number of factors
and choices, but that is what it will come down to.
The Textus Receptus worked well in the Protestant Reformation. That is not
surprising since it is and remains the real and genuine Bible. It agrees with
almost all of the Bibles that came before it, with the exception of the family
of manuscripts that came from Eusebius/Constantine/Vulgate/Vaticanus and that
corrupt lines of manuscripts.
Therefore although we do not have one perfect ancient copy of the N.T., we
are deliberately Forced by God to Have to rely on what the thousands of
Christians wrote in all parts of the world, and transmitted to others As
the Word of God. This is because it Was and Is the Word of God.
Those who want to make it something else will still try. And no matter how
perfect the Bible ever is, it will always be attacked by those like Westcott
& Hort. But this point is applicable to Von Soden as well, and to Hodges
& Farstad in particular: If you are going to say that something is the
Majority Text, then others are going to hold you towards defending your claim or
changing it. What we know for a fact, about the Von Soden/Hodges/Farstad version
is that it Neglects the Majority of the Texts, by about 90%.
