NASB

Where does the NASB  come from ?

The Official NASB Site says:

"The KJV became the basis for the English Revised Version appearing in 1881 (New Testament) and 1885 (Old Testament). The American counterpart of this last work was published in 1901 as the American Standard Version. The ASV, a product of both British and American scholarship, has been highly regarded for its scholarship, and accuracy.

Recognizing the values of the American Standard Version, The Lockman Foundation felt an urgency to preserve these and other lasting values of the ASV, by incorporating recent discoveries of Hebrew and Greek textual sources and by rendering it into more current English. Therefore, in 1959 a new translation project was launched, based on the time-honored principles of translation of the ASV and KJV. The result is the New American Standard Bible."

Refutation of the above statement:

"The KJV became the basis for the English Revised Version appearing in 1881 (New Testament) and 1885 (Old Testament)."

That is NOT true. The King James Version was NOT the basis for the Revised Version of 1881. The Basis for the Revised Version of 1881 was the Greek Text of Westcott & Hort.

In Fact, Westcott & Hort produced two texts:

1. The Greek New Testament of Westcott & Hort, and

2. The Revised Version of 1881 in English (which was overseen and supervised by

Westcott & Hort)

"The American counterpart of this last work was published in 1901 as the American Standard Version. The ASV, a product of both British and American scholarship, has been highly regarded for its scholarship, and accuracy."

The conclusion that the ASV was "highly regarded" is not true either.  Westcott & Hort established an American Committee to smooth the way for the RSV to be able to come into the U.S. The American Committee was able to make recomendations, but was actually not able to make any changes to the RSV until 1901, because that was 20 years after the original Revised Version of Westcott & Hort (of 1881).

The ASV (American Standard Version) committee was designed to fool the public.

The problems that remained with the Westcott & Hort translation, remained with the ASV. Who was the head of the ASV Committee ? It was none other than the German Textual Critic Philip Schaff. While Schaff is revered for his historical work (especially by those who know little about history), it should be noted that he received his theological training in Germany under German Textual Critics.

Most people today do NOT KNOW that Philip Schaff was tried for Heresy in the 1800s.

However, that did not prevent him from becoming President of Union Theological Seminary, which has been one of the first seminaries in the U.S. to attack the Deity of Jesus Christ, and consistently undermine the authority of Scripture.

"The ASV, a product of both British and American scholarship, has been highly regarded for its scholarship, and accuracy"

No, this is not true either. The RSV was instantly assailed by Conservative Christians, including scholars such as Oxford Professor John William Burgon in his 560 page book "The Revision Revised", and Philip Mauro in his work "Which Version", as well as many other books and articles. F.H.A. Scrivener also decried the Revised Version of Westcott & Hort.

Westcott and Hort and their work have been repeatedly attacked for their heretical views of Occult Involvement as well as for their poor Scholarship in Greek, as their Greek Text demonstrates.

The Greek Text of Westcott & Hort (which is the root of the NASB) differs from the Traditional Received Text of the Bible in Greek - which the church has used for 2000 years.

The Greek Text of Westcott & Hort differs from the Bible Manuscripts in more than 3000 places (according to Oxford Professor John William Burgon).

The Official P.R. Lines from the Official NASB Site:

More than fifty who have earned doctorates in Biblical languages worked on the translation of the Scriptures. They actively teach in colleges and seminaries, including Wheaton College, Northwestern Seminary, Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, Dallas Theological Seminary, Fuller Theological Seminary, Talbot Theological Seminary, California State University, Bethany Nazarene College, Azusa-Pacific College, Bob Jones University, Mennonite Brethren Biblical Seminary, Covenant Theological Seminary, Grace Theological Seminary, Texas Christian University, Seattle Bible School, Southern California College, Westmont College, Point Loma College, and Regent College.

The translators come from Presbyterian, Methodist, American Baptist, Disciples, Southern Baptist, Nazarene, General Association of Regular Baptist, Congregational, Independent Baptist, Free Methodist, and still other denominations. Some have international reputations. All support the philosophy of literal translation and the doctrinal statement of The Lockman Foundation, including the inerrancy of the Scriptures.
