FROM WITCHCRAFT TO CHRIST
How a group of remote Totonac Indians in Mexico were reached with the Gospel by
native evangelists

ZITLALA, MEXICO (ANS) -- A group of native
evangelists working amongst the remote Totonac Indians in Mexico has seen a
family turn from witchcraft to Christ.
Dr.
Dale W. Kietzman, founder of president of Latin American Indian Ministries based
in Pasadena, California, revealed the extraordinary story in a recent message to
supporters.
“The work among the Native Americans throughout Latin America continues to
grow, with the Indian believers themselves taking the initiative in
spreading
the Gospel,” he said. “Your gift helps them with necessary expenses for
literature, travel and so on. But they are the evangelists, spreading the Gospel
to those who have never heard.”
Kietzman then translated a report that has come in from one evangelistic band,
which has been visiting repeatedly, all the homes in the little rancheria of
Zitlala, in the Totonac Sierra of Mexico.
The report said, “The workers that have the responsibility for the church
being planted in Zitlala, report a new family has joined the group meeting every
Sunday. When first contacted, the family had been very involved in
Witchcraft.
They said that they spent all they earned working in the fields, and even their
chickens and turkeys, all paid to the witchdoctors, who promised them that all
the problems the family faced would be resolved.
“They were never able to eat meat, or to buy clothes, yet they realized that,
week by week, their situation was getting worse. They were feeling more and more
desperate when the evangelists began to visit their home every week. It was an
opportune moment when the evangelists explained the Gospel. They listened, and
sensing relief from their problems, they accepted Christ. Now they are attending
the meetings. Thanks be to God for the work of these evangelists!”
Kietzman, who is also a founding board member of ASSIST Ministries, added,
“The report goes on to note that the number of children being taught on
Saturday continues to grow. These families do not have a government school their
children can attend, so the Saturday classes attract most of the children in
town. The need for school books and supplies is very great, and we scrounge to
meet their needs.
“We value your prayers for situations such as this.”
