Alistair Cooke's bones 'stolen'
Dec 22/05 - BBC - An investigation is under way in New York into allegations that the bones of the late broadcaster Alistair Cooke were stolen before his cremation.
Cooke, known for the Letter from America he broadcast for the BBC, died almost two years ago, aged 95.
According to the New York Daily News his bones were stolen by a criminal ring trading body parts.
They were later sold by a biomedical tissue company now under investigation, the paper claims.
When Cooke died of lung cancer that spread to his bones in March 2004, his body was taken to a funeral home in Manhattan.
Two days later, relatives of the iconic broadcaster received his ashes, which were then scattered in New York's Central Park.

Lutheran minister’s theology of evil altered by events

WICHITA, KANSAS (ANS) - Aug 26/05 - He’s faithfully visited notorious serial killer Dennis Rader every week at the county jail and still sees himself as his pastor. But the Dennis Rader he saw make a rambling final statement in court is not the same person he knows.
“The person I heard in the courtroom was not the real Dennis,” says Michael Clark, pastor of Christ Lutheran Church in Wichita. “There was someone else speaking from Dennis that day,” he believes. “I personally think

“From all that I’ve seen and the people I’ve talked with who have dealt with demonic possession, I feel there was something working there,” he adds. “When I go back to the beginning when Dennis made his first statement to the public about his condition in the’70s he said, ‘There’s a monster inside of me that I can’t control.’”
On August 18 Judge Gregory Waller sentenced Rader to 10 consecutive life sentences—a minimum of 175 years in prison—with no possibility of parole. At the sentencing hearing Rader delivered a rambling 30-minute discourse in which he often compared himself with his victims. Rev. Clark observed the entire proceeding inside the courtroom.
“Sedgwick County has a monster,” Rader told a rapt audience. “The old me started whatever it was—factor X—sexual predator,” he said.
Rader described one murder victim, Marine Hedge, as “a neighbor, one I walked by and waved to, a gardener. I love to garden, flowers. She attended church, the same church I had been to with Boy Scouts.”
One by one, Rader continued in a bizarre fashion to compare himself with the personal habits and hobbies, likes and dislikes of each victim. At one point in his discourse he described the afterlife as “smoke.”
He even referred to his own compartmentalized personality. “When this happened, I was what I would say not total at one time. Part of me (was) only the thoughts that compartmentalize…and that has been my biggest wreck back and forth…I could switch back and forth fairly fast.”
As Rev. Clark listened, he was struck by the inconsistency with the man he knew. “I honestly don’t think it was the Dennis Rader I know who was a member of this congregation and who I worked with in leadership,” he says.
“It was a power, an evil force that was controlling.”
On the Friday Rader was arrested, Rev. Clark had just finished his Sunday sermon when the doorbell rang at his church office. It was an officer and three detectives armed with a search warrant. When they identified Rader as a suspect in the BTK serial killings, Clark was stupefied.
“I had to ask at least three times to clarify what I thought I heard,” Clark says. “It took me a half hour to understand what I heard,” he says. “I was at the point where I couldn’t say anything. I was speechless, and I haven’t been that way too often.”
Rader was president of their 11-member church council—a position elected by the congregation. “Dennis has been actively involved with this church for 20-30 years,” Clark notes. “That’s probably one of the pieces that has so many people reeling in disbelief,” he says. “He’s here all the time.”
Growing up in the Lutheran tradition at another church in the Wichita area, Rader was confirmed as a teenager after completing his catechism, according to Clark. “He had to be confirmed in order to be a commissioned and active member of this church.”
Rev. Clark still believes Rader is a Christian, but Rader’s shocking double life caused Clark to reexamine his theology of evil during the last few months. First Clark read C.S. Lewis’ classic “Screwtape Letters” as well as Scott Peck’s “A Glimpse of the Devil.” Then he consulted with a retired Lutheran pastor who experienced demonic encounters in the mission field.
The readings and conversations altered Rev. Clark’s views about Satan, causing a dramatic shift in his theology of evil. “You might say it has changed 180 degrees,” he notes. “I’ve got a completely different perspective on evil than I had six months ago.”
While Rader may need specialized treatment to address his condition, Rev. Clark is not sure he’s the one to provide it. “I’ve learned more about the value and purpose of exorcism,” he says. “I’m not sure I would get involved with that because it takes specialized training and skills.”
“It’s not something you play around with—it’s very dangerous,”
he adds.
“We’re so used to dealing with the psychological and scientific model,” he continues. “We don’t recognize the possibility of a spiritual explanation.” He takes issue with those who would be quick to apply a label to Rader such as ‘psychopath’ or ‘sociopath.’
“We give people medications to deal with psychological conditions but we don’t get to the core
issue—the existence of the demonic,” he adds.
Surprisingly, Rev. Clark’s congregation has grown throughout this ordeal, but healing the wounds of the victims’ families will take time. “We’ve got a long way to go,” Clark says. “Because it gets so dark we can’t see where God is at, it’s like walking into a massive fog,” he says. “But God is there and He’s good—I’m certain of that.”

"We'd built these two rooms, the physiotherapy and hydrotherapy rooms - they're a huge part of the ending of the movie. And one half of it, the physiotherapy side, just got weird.
"We were there for six weeks in this room, and people were getting sick, or didn't feel good or got angry. There was just something about that
room."

- India - 80 Hindus Charged for Burying Children Alive
NEW DELHI (Reuters) - Ap 14/05 - Indian police have charged 80 people for burying children alive in an ancient Hindu ceremony known as "the festival of pits."
The ceremony, in which children -- some less than a year old -- are buried alive briefly and then dug up, happened on Monday in southern Tamil Nadu state, The Asian Age reported on Thursday.
Authorities have been trying for years to stop it and people found guilty face up to three years in jail and or a fine of 5000 rupees ($114).
Every two years, parents who have vowed to bury their first-born if they are blessed with a child, take part in the Kuzhimattru Thiru Vizha ceremony.
The children are drugged to make them unconscious and placed in shallow "graves" in temple courtyards. The pits are covered with leaves and dirt and the children are pulled out after Hindu priests chant a brief prayer -- lasting up to a minute.

Kolkata, April 14/05 (IANS) In a bizarre ritual, a group of worshippers exhumed freshly buried bodies, decapitated them and offered the heads to Lord Shiva in a West Bengal village.
In another village in Burdwan district, a group of worshippers in a local festival danced with the blood-soaked head of a child who had died hours earlier.
Police said a group of people exhumed the bodies of a five-year-old boy, a 35-year-old woman and an elderly man from a burial ground on the banks of the Padma river in Jalangi village in Murshidabad district Wednesday and offered their heads to appease Lord Shiva.
The incident came to light after Bharati, the daughter of the old man, Raghupada Das, complained to police that her father's body was exhumed and beheaded for the rituals. Though a Hindu, the man had been buried instead of being cremated.
In the same area, the heads of another five-year-old boy and a 35-year-old woman were severed and used for the same ritual. The boy was identified as Surajit Biswas and the woman as Bimala Mandal, both Hindus.
Meanwhile, at the Gajan festival in Kurmun village of Burdwan district, a crowd of over 1,000 was horrified to witness a procession of a group of worshippers carrying the impaled head of a child whose body was exhumed from a burial ground soon after it was laid to rest.

In India, temple prostitutes are called devdasi, "servants of the gods." Nearly all of these devdasi come from outcaste groups; they are the very poorest of the poor. In Hinduism, it is a solemn obligation for all parents to see that their daughters are safely cared for, in marriage. Dowries are very expensive, and the poorest cannot afford them, especially when they have many daughters. An alternative to paying a dowry is to take their daughters at puberty, and
"marry" them to a god at the temple, especially in March and April every year. The practice is encouraged by some priests with a promise that the whole family may be born into a higher caste with their next
rebirth. After the priests are finished with the services of the new devdasi, a well-established network exists for them to become commercial

Mar 31 & Ap 4/05 - Praveen Rathod (22) was in a hurry to taste success and was willing to do anything to achieve it. So, on the basis of a tantrik’s advice, he decided to kill his five-year-old
brother, Jayesh, as a sacrifice to appease the Gods.
Nearly a year after Praveen committed the crime, senior police inspector Aslam Momin and CID Unit 3 of the Mumbai police arrested him on Monday.
They are currently looking for the tantrik who orchestrated the sinister plot.
After his arrest, Praveen told the police that he was obsessed with being rich and successful. In February 2004, he met a Dharavi-based sadhu who called himself Bangali baba. The baba advised him to arrange for a nar bali or human sacrifice.
On April 4, on the tantrik’s suggestion, Praveen took the five year old to Mahalakshmi Race Course on the pretext of showing him around and strangled him under a Neem tree.

BBC- Mar 17/05 - A Nigerian man who killed his friend in central Plateau state to sell his body parts for ritual witchcraft purposes has been sentenced to death by hanging.
Jacob Wakfan, 35, confessed to luring his victim into the bush and stabbing him and removing his penis and tongue.
"The convict's desire to make quick money led him to commit this heinous and treacherous act," judge Felicia Dusu said, AFP news agency reports.
Belief in witchcraft or "juju" is widespread in Nigeria.
According to the BBC's Yusuf Sarki Muhammad in Abuja, despite condemnation of traditional ritual killings, they are common across the country - in the Muslim north and the Christian south.
Last week, police in the south-western city of Ibadan found three headless bodies in what they suspect are ritual killing murders.
Traditional healers are widely consulted for cures of various ailments and magical powers to protect their clients from a wide range of misfortunes, or to bring good luck.
In some traditional practices, human body
parts are used to make the charms more powerful.

Colonia Dignidad
Colonia Dignidad (later renamed Villa Baviera) is a settlement in southern Chile founded by German immigrants in 1961. Its secretive and seclusive nature have made it, much like Area 51, a fertile ground for a nefarious mix of both fact and legend. Some claim it was a Nazi resort used by Augusto Pinochet to torture and kill political dissidents. Still others have speculated Colonia Dignidad was also used by its Nazi founders for occult rituals (See
Unholy Alliance by Peter Levendas, ISBN 0826414095).
Survivor accounts have verified that the German colony known as Colonia Dignidad was used for the detention and torture of political prisoners during Pinochet's dictatorial rule of Chile. Most accounts have this happening between 1973 and 1977 but precise dates are not known.
Investigations by Amnesty International and the Chilean National Commission for Truth and Reconciliation Report have further confirmed that Colonia Dignidad was used as an arm of DINA, the Chilean secret police, in conjunction with the colony's leaders for holding and torturing political prisoners.

RIO DE JANEIRO, March 11/05 - After a manhunt that lasted nearly a decade, the Chilean and Argentine police on Friday announced the arrest of the fugitive leader of Colonia Dignidad, a bizarre paramilitary religious sect of German émigrés established in southern Chile in the early 1960's that later allied itself with the dictatorship of Gen. Augusto Pinochet.
The Argentine authorities said Paul Schafer, 83, a former Luftwaffe medic, was apprehended Thursday afternoon in a gated community outside Buenos Aires. He was convicted in absentia by a Chilean court late last year of committing sodomy and pedophilia with 26 children, and also faces accusations of human rights abuses and numerous charges of kidnapping, forced labor, fraud and tax evasion in Chile.
Mr. Schafer, was known to the approximately 300 residents of the Colonia Dignidad commune as "the Permanent Uncle." He controlled every detail of their lives, deciding whom and when they could marry and often ordering that babies be taken from their parents at birth and raised collectively under his charge.
According to human rights groups, Colonia Dignidad served as a clandestine torture and detention center during the Pinochet dictatorship. Not only did the group supply Chilean military intelligence with a house that was used as a regional headquarters, but political prisoners the government wanted to stash out of sight were also transferred to secret cells in Colonia Dignidad, according to survivors and a Chilean government human rights report.

Italy: satanic murder trial opens
Jan 13/05 - BBC - The trial of eight young members of a group calling itself the
"Beasts of Satan" has opened in Italy.
The group - seven men and one woman - face charges of involvement in the murder of three friends and the death by suicide of a fourth.
Claims by members of the group that they were acting in the name of Satan have shocked the Catholic country.
The murders appeared to have been part of a drug-fuelled Satanic ritual involving sex and heavy metal music.
The affair was exposed last year when the body of the most recent victim - 27-year-old Mariangela Pezzotta, killed in January 2004 - was discovered in a forest outside the sleepy commuter village of Busto Arsizio in northern Italy.
'Seeking truth'
She had been engaged to the leader of the group, Andrea Volpe, who attended court with his head hooded.
The discovery of her body led investigators to those of two young people who had disappeared in 1998 - a 19-year-old girl and 16-year-old boy.

Jan 21/05 - BBC - Luke Mitchell was born in July 1988 and was living in Newbattle Road, Dalkeith, when he began going out with schoolgirl Jodi Jones.
Jodi, 14, from Easthouses, Dalkeith, was a pupil at St David's Roman Catholic High School along with Luke.
She had been taking a shortcut along a woodland path to Luke's house on 30 June, 2003 when
she was brutally attacked and mutilated by the killer.
Mitchell and Jodi had begun going out in about March 2003.
They saw each other a couple of times a week at first, but before long they were spending time together most nights.
On the evening of 30 June, Jodi had left her family home at about 1700 BST but the alarm was raised later when she failed to get to Mitchell's house or return home.

Dead sheep found in 'occult star'
BBC - Jan 13/05 - Police in Devon are investigating after seven sheep were found dead arranged in an unusual pattern on Dartmoor.
The sheep were found on Sampford Spiney on Dartmoor with their necks broken and their bodies in a pattern sometimes associated with the occult.
The pattern was similar to the shape of a star, or heptagram, a mystical symbol commonly used in occult ceremonies.

The animal carried European Bat Lyssavirus, which is closely linked to the classic rabies virus.
Three people are known to have handled the bat but all took precautions and are now receiving medical treatment.
The bat was found by a member of the public in Staines last month and tested at the Veterinary Laboratories Agency in Weybridge, Surrey.

The EBLV virus is common in bats across Northern Europe but only two other cases had previously been discovered in the UK - one in 1996 and the most recent in 2002 when David McRae, from Angus, Scotland, died after contracting rabies from a bat bite.
Initial tests showed that the strain of virus in the new case was closely linked to the previous examples, according to the Health Protection Agency and the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.
Confirmatory tests are now to be conducted and the incident is still being investigated.
Human Sacrifices in Mexico: Headless Bodies Found at Mysterious Mexico Pyramid
MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Dec 2/04 - The discovery of a tomb filled with decapitated bodies suggests Mexico's 2,000 year-old "Pyramid of the Moon" may have been the site of horrifically gory sacrifices, archeologists said on Thursday.
The tomb at Teotihuacan, the first major city built in the Americas, whose origins are one of history's great mysteries, also held the bound carcasses of eagles, dogs and other animals.
"It is hard to believe that the ritual consisted of clean, symbolic performances -- it is most likely that the ceremony created a
horrible scene of bloodshed with sacrificed people and
animals," said Saburo Sugiyama, one of the scientists leading the ongoing dig.
"Whether the victims and animals were killed at the site or a nearby place, this foundation ritual must have been one of the most terrifying acts recorded archeologically in Mesoamerica."
Of the 12 human bodies found, 10 were decapitated and then tossed, rather than arranged, on one side of the burial site. The two other bodies were richly ornamented with beads and a necklace made of imitation human jaws.
The Aztecs came across Teotihuacan's towering stone pyramids in about 1500 A.D., centuries after the city was torched and abandoned. It is not known what language its inhabitants spoke, but the Aztecs named it "The Place Where Men Become Gods," believing it was a divine site....
Sugiyama said the nearly complete excavation indicates the Pyramid of the Moon was significant to its builders as a site for celebrating state power through ceremony and sacrifice.
The sacrifices were carried out during the expansion of one of the city's major monuments, suggesting the government wanted to symbolize growing sacred political power.
"Contrary to some past interpretation, militarism was apparently central to the city's culture," the excavation team said in a statement.
Da Vinci Code is 'lousy history'
BBC - Dec 24/04 - The plot of an international bestseller that thousands of readers are likely to receive as a Christmas present is 'laughable', a clergyman has said.
The Da Vinci Code claims Jesus was not crucified, but married Mary Magdalene and died a normal death. It claims this was later covered up by the Church.
The Bishop of Durham, the Rt Rev Dr Tom Wright, described the novel as a "great thriller" but "lousy history".
The book has sold more than seven million copies worldwide.
Despite enjoying Dan Brown's conspiracy theory, the Bishop said there was a lack
of evidence to back up its claims.
BBC - Aug 13/04 - Nigerian police say they have found a further 33 bodies in addition to the 50 already uncovered in fetish shrines in south-eastern Anambra state.
A traditional cult reputed to carry out ritual killings is thought to have carried out the murders.
Some of the corpses had hands, genitals or heads missing.
Police have displayed skulls - and five men of the 30 or so people arrested in connection with the murders - to correspondents in the capital, Abuja.
'Parallel court'
"Police are concerned about how the headless bodies found their way into the shrines," said deputy police chief Sunday Ehindero.
However, a spokesman for those arrested denied any involvement in the killings.
"Since I have been there, for two years, I have not seen anybody killed by these people. Rather, the shrines kill," said Collin Obi.
He said bodies had been brought to the Okija shrines by family members.
Mr Ehindero said groups involved in disagreements had gone to the shrines to take part in black magic rituals.
"What we are saying is that we found there is a parallel court," he said.
Police found the shrines after being tipped off by a local villager in Okija who reported the priests had eaten the flesh of some of their victims.

BBC - Aug 6/04 - Some 30 people in Nigeria have been arrested after 50 corpses were found by police in a raid on fetish shrines.
Twenty skulls, as well as genitals and other body parts were in a forest in south-eastern Anambra state.
Those arrested are members of a sect known to kill their victims during rituals in the belief that it will bring them riches.
The majority of Nigeria's 130m people are Muslim or Christian, but some also believe in the power of ritual magic.
Coffins
Police were tipped off by a local villager in Okija who reported the priests had eaten the flesh of some of their victims.
"They were in coffins. There was no smell, not a single fly. This gives an indication that some chemicals must have been used on these bodies," Anambra State police spokesman Kolapo Shofoluwe told the AFP news agency.
According to the BBC's Chukwujama Eze in south-eastern Nigeria, the magnitude of the find has shocked residents.
A good number of the corpses had parts missing - hands, genitals or heads.

India - Ravi Shankar calls for restraint over seer's arrest
New Delhi, Nov 13/04- (IANS) Indian spiritual guru Sri Sri Ravi Shankar Saturday appealed to Hindus to keep their calm and not to precipitate matters in the wake of the Kanchi Shankaracharya's arrest in connection with a murder case.
In a statement issued in Rishikesh in Uttaranchal, Ravi Shankar urged the people not to make the crisis the religion was going through into a communal issue.
He said the news of Kanchi Shankaracharya Jayendra Saraswathi's arrest Thursday had shaken the Hindu psyche.
"Saints cannot even think of committing such a crime. At a time when such an accusation has been made, all that one can say is that saints should keep a watch on people around them," he said.
Shankaracharya Jayendra Saraswathi, head of the Kanchipuram hermitage in Tamil Nadu, was arrested for alleged involvement in the murder of Sankara Raman, a manager of the Varadaraja Perumal temple in the same town.

Detectives investigating the death of a Cornish parish councillor have confirmed they are looking at possible links with the occult.
They believe 56-year-old Peter Solheim, from Carnkie, was interested in black magic.
Police launched the murder hunt after fishermen recovered Mr Solheim's body five miles off the Lizard Peninsula, Cornwall, on 18 June.
He was last seen launching his dinghy at Mylor Harbour on 16 June.
A Devon and Cornwall Police spokeswoman said: "We are aware of his interest in the occult and it is one of a number of lines of inquiry we are following up."
The Arch Druid of Cornwall, Ed Prynn, has confirmed to the BBC that
Mr Solheim was also a druid.

'Satanic killings' shock Italians
Jun 8/04- BBC- A gruesome find in a wood outside Milan has sparked fears that bored young Italians could be coming under the influence of Satanic cults.
The news has caused an outbreak of soul-searching in Catholic Italy.
Even hardened police officers were shocked by what they found outside the sleepy commuter town of Busto
Arsizio.
Two teenagers' bodies were discovered in a makeshift grave, killed - police say - as part of a satanic ritual involving sex, drugs and rock and roll.
The two - a 19-year-old girl and a 16-year-old boy - were last seen alive leaving a pizzeria with other members of their heavy metal rock band, called the Beasts of Satan.
What happened next is still the subject of investigation.
But the magistrate leading the inquiry says they were murdered at the end of a drug-fuelled ritual which involved a level of cruelty he has never seen before.

PATNA: Police in east India have found about 50 human skulls
in a field but ruled out foul play, officials said Thursday.
The skulls were discovered four feet (1.3 metres) underground by labourers
digging a field in the village of Rohiyama, in Khagaria district, 200 kilometres
(124 miles) from Patna, the capital of the eastern state of Bihar.
“The human skulls have been sent for forensic tests to ascertain how ancient

A Brazilian doctor has been sentenced to 77 years in prison for his part in the murder and sexual mutilation of boys in the Amazon town of Altamira between 1989 and 1993.
A public prosecutor said that there was evidence that the sect, called the LUS, or Superior Universal Alignment, whose headquarters are said to be in Argentina, also has followers in other countries, including Holland and Paraguay.
It is believed that the boys' sexual organs were used in rites of black magic.

Brazil jails occult killers of Children
BBC- Aug 31/2003 - A court in Belem, northern Brazil, has sentenced two men to a total of 92 years' imprisonment for their part in the murder and sexual mutilation of young boys in the Amazon town of Altamira between 1989 and 1993.
The trial was marked by dramatic moments.
Outside, hundreds of people, including relatives of the murdered boys, marched on the courthouse carrying their pictures. They also held banners demanding justice.
Inside, two of the three survivors, who escaped after being mutilated, recognised the two men on trial.
One of the survivors said: "Then I was a child and afraid, but now I'm an adult and I'm not afraid anymore."
He said he had been lured into the forest, tied to a tree and smothered with chloroform to make him unconscious.
A total of 19 boys aged from eight to 14 were attacked.
Five were mutilated and died, three escaped with horrible injuries, six escaped before they were harmed and five have never been seen again.
All the attacks took place between 1989 and 1993.
Delay
One of the prosecuting lawyers, commenting on this long delay in bringing the accused to justice, said the trial is a test of Brazil's capacity to bring justice to remote areas.
The jury found both men guilty of murder.
Carlos Alberto Santos, a security guard and former policeman, was sentenced to 35 years.
Amailton Gomes, son of a landowner, received 57 years.
Both were remanded in custody pending appeals.

BBC - Ap 25/03 - A court in Malaysia has jailed five men for killing a princess, in a case that has gripped the nation amid claims that black magic was involved.
Four were sentenced to 20 years in jail each and one, who had confessed earlier to manslaughter, was sentenced to 14 years by the Taiping high court.
Princess Hazleza Ishak, 26, was a former model abducted last October. She was the second, younger, wife of Raja Jaafar Muda Musa, second in line to become Sultan of the state of Perak.
Malaysia's Bernama news agency said the convicted men were found guilty on an amended charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
Two of those jailed were described as "bomohs," or witchdoctors.
Princess Hazleza's body was found soon after she was abducted. She had been bound and gagged and thrown from a bridge in a jungle clearing in Perak.
She had apparently been dragged from her car in broad daylight. Her body was reportedly found in a state of undress.
The witchdoctor jailed for 14 years had confessed to kidnapping her for a fee of 5,000 ringgit ($1,316), chopping her on the neck with his hand and throwing her off the bridge, the AFP news agency reported.
The prince's first wife of many years, to whom he is still married, was arrested and held for questioning for six days, then released without charge.
'Dead birds'
But what really intrigued people were the allegations of black magic, according to Lionel Morais, crime correspondent of the Malay Mail.
It was said in court that there were dead birds in the compound of the palace, that the prince's first wife started vomiting blood," he said.
"A bomoh, a traditional medicine man, was also involved, which lent credence to the fact that black magic was used.
"All this came out in open court and that gripped the readers and the nation."
The BBC's Jonathan Kent in Kuala Lumpur says allegations that jealousies between the two wives may have been a factor are a familiar talking point in a country where polygamy is still common.
Rehman Rashid, associate editor of the New Straits Times, says the case has also exposed some core aspects of the Malay psyche.
"Very ancient old and dark things are at work here," he commented.
"There are the ancient dignities of the royal houses, coupled with this apparent continuing belief in black magic as an element in how we adjust to each other's relationships."
Princess Hazleza appeared in a local movie, Putera, several years ago.
Privilege
She was said to be a divorcee and is variously reported as having one or two children from a previous marriage.
Palace sources say she married Raja Jaafar in January last year.
Nine of Malaysia's states have royal families and the nine rulers take it in turns to be head of state, with the title passing to a new king every five years.
The royals are treated with considerable deference and lead privileged lives.
Although the rulers wield very little political power they play a prominent ceremonial role and it is widely considered taboo to criticise them.

Superior - A man has been sentenced to three years in prison for his role in the 1997 voodoo ritual killing of his uncle.
Brent A. Thompson, 29, of Kimball, Minn., admitted to driving the victim, Mark Foster, and the convicted shooter, Gregory Friesner, to rural Douglas County, dumping the gun in the St. Croix River and then repeatedly lying to police.
Authorities said Foster designated Friesner to kill him, and thereby assume Foster's priesthood and acquire his soul as well as the souls of preceding high priests.

Jun 28/02 - BBC - A 15-year-old boy said to be obsessed with death and the occult has been convicted of trying to persuade his girlfriend to commit suicide.
The teenager - who cannot be named for legal reasons - had denied the little-used charge of attempting to procure suicide.
Swansea Crown Court heard on Friday how the girl - also unidentified - fell off a jetty at Aberystwyth onto rocks 25 feet below.
She was knocked unconscious and suffered serious facial injuries.
Her life was saved by two fishermen who carried her to safety just as the incoming tide was about to wash her away.

BBC - April 3/02 - But in the absence of human volunteers, devotees at the Kamakhya Temple near the state capital Guwahati are using six-foot effigies made of flour for the rite.
Steeped in secrecy, human sacrifices to the Mother Goddess Shakti were thought to have died out completely.
The revival of the "Nara bali" practice a few years ago would have remained under wraps had it not been for an academic researching the temple, one of India's holiest pilgrimage sites.
The cult followers had apparently wanted live humans to revive the gory tradition, but opted for an effigy instead fearing a backlash.
Ancient worship
"A willing human being is difficult to find these days," said Dr Pradeep Sharmah, director of the Vivekananda Kendra Institute of Culture
He said priests had already been heavily criticised by animal rights groups for their use of animals in ritual sacrifices, hence their decision to use human effigies instead of the real thing.
Dr Sharmah was inducted into the inner circle of a handful of "Shakta" priests after he won their trust.
"The sacrifice is made at midnight, on the day of Ashtami during the 10-day autumnal Durga Puja," said Dr Sharmah.
But it can also be carried out on any day specified by divine forces.
"The ancient worshippers believed that the person to be sacrificed was sent by god, and as a rule a woman would never be put to the altar," Dr Sharmah said.
The Kamakhya Temple attracts some 10,000 devotees per day, but certain aspects of the temple's ceremonies - including sacrifices - have been kept closely-guarded secrets.
No witnesses
The administrator of the Kamakhya Trust, Bharati Prasad Sarma, said that no outsiders were ever allowed to witness a sacrifice.
"It is believed that if anyone tries to see the act, evil is bestowed upon him by the Mother," he said.
The administrator said the schoolboy son of a temple priest, or panda, fell blind last year when he tried secretly to watch a ceremony.
The pandas say that only a chosen few are eligible to conduct a sacrifice.
Research shows that human sacrifice at Kamakhya was first revived 75 years ago, but was discontinued a few years later.
A 1933 journal of the Assam Research Society says that living people were sacrificed until the reign of King Gaurinath Singha between 1780 and 1796.
Records of earlier periods at the Department of Historical and Antiquarian Studies indicate that the practice was widespread in Assam.

Jan 31/2002 - BBC - A German couple who killed a man by stabbing him 66 times in a Satanic ritual have been jailed for murder at the end of a trial that has horrified and fascinated the country.
Daniel and Manuela Ruda never denied killing their victim, but argued it was not murder because they were acting on the Devil's orders.
They received sentences of 15 and 13 years respectively in a secure psychiatric ward.
The decomposing body of the dead man, Frank Haagen, was found in the couple's flat in July with a scalpel protruding from his stomach and the sign of the Devil carved into his chest.
The couple were arrested a week later.

The presiding judge, Arnjo Kerstingtombroke, stipulated that the couple should receive therapy in jail, to ensure that they never repeated their crime.

Accounts of the gruesome killing, in a room full of human skulls, cemetery lights, and a coffin in which Manuela slept, have been given detailed coverage in the German media.
Manuela Ruda, aged 23, told the court that Satan had called her when she was 14.
She said she shunned strong light and had become involved in vampirism at "bite parties" in London.
She and Daniel, aged 26, said they attempted suicide during several days on the run after killing their victim, who worked with Daniel selling car parts.

"Daniel struck him on the head twice with the hammer. But he suddenly stood up again and walked towards the television.

After killing Mr Haagen, the couple cut an occult star on his stomach, drank his blood from a bowl and had sex in a coffin in which Mrs Ruda usually slept.
Mr Haagen's mutilated and partially decomposed body was found in their flat.
It had a scalpel protruding from his stomach, and a pentagram, the sign of the Devil, carved into his chest.

Aug 31/01- BBC - Germany has been traumatised by the death of three teenagers with links to satanism who committed suicide by jumping off a bridge in the east of the country.
The full circumstances remain a mystery, but the incident has fuelled fears that young people may be ending their lives after taking part in "death chats" on the internet.
The latest incident occurred overnight between 25 and 26 August, when the youngsters jumped from a bridge already infamous for suicides - the 78metre high Goeltzschtal Bridge near Reichenbach.
The three boys aged 14, 17 and 18 lived in Reichenbach, in what was formerly East Germany. The youngest and the oldest had their feet tied.
It is known that all three had connections with satanism, but they were apparently not full-blown members of any particular

BBC- July 12/00 - A man in the United States who is a self-proclaimed devil worshipper has pleaded guilty to setting fire to 26 churches around the country.The man, Jay Scott Ballinger, faces at least 42 years in prison, following a plea agreement with the US Justice Department.
Officials said he travelled around claiming to be a missionary of Satan, and would set fire to isolated churches at night as part of his campaign against organised Christian religion.
About 900 places of worship have been burned down across the United States since President Bill Clinton formed a special task force to investigate church arson in 1996.
Pact with the devil
Ballinger's arrest in 1999 was a significant breakthrough for the National Church Action Task Force.
Although it has arrested more than 300 people in connection with more than 200 arsons or bombings between 1995 and October 1999, none have approached the scale of Ballinger's case.
It was widely acknowledged as by far the largest known number of arsons attributed to one person of group of people.
Ballinger, 36, was arrested in February 1999 after seeking treatment at a hospital for severe burns. Satanic books and writings were recovered from his home.
The Justice Department said Ballinger signed individuals he met to contracts with the devil.
Severe burns
At the time, Ballinger admitted to starting as many as 50 church fires in 11 states.
He still faces federal charges in Georgia for starting five church fires in 1998 and 1999, including one in which a fire-fighter was killed....
Ballinger is reported to have suffered severe burns over 35% to 40% of his body in a fire in February. He has undergone four skin grafts and is being held at a US medical centre for prisoners.
INDIA - Indian cult scare as youths 'call' Satan

Guwahati - Church leaders in the Christian-dominated Indian state of
Mizoram voiced concern on Friday at a growing trend among young people for
indulging in Satanic rituals.
"Small groups, numbering about ten youths, converge in the middle of the
night in cemeteries and start invoking Satan using a monkey skull inscribed with
the words 'God is Satan'," a church official said.
"After that they fall into a hypnotic state and start slashing their wrists
with the blood used as offerings for the devil."

India - Indian temple revives 'human sacrifice'

Followers of a Hindu cult in India's north-eastern state of Assam have revived the ancient practice of human sacrifice.
But in the absence of human volunteers, devotees at the Kamakhya Temple near the state capital Guwahati are using - temporarily - six-foot effigies made of flour for the rite.
Steeped in secrecy, human sacrifices to the Mother Goddess Shakti were thought to have died out completely.
The revival of the "Nara bali" practice a few years ago would have remained under wraps had it not been for an academic researching the temple, one of India's holiest pilgrimage sites.

UK - Police investigate satanic abuse charges
Feb 9, 2000BBC- Allegations of satanic abuse are to be investigated by the Metropolitan Police, after a psycho-therapist working for the government said her own clinical experience suggests it exists.
Valerie Sinason, who was commissioned by the Department of Health to carry out research into satanic abuse, will present her findings in the next few months.
The report is based on allegations made by some 76 children and adults involving sexual abuse and murder.

Man boils brain, eats tongue of lover

Kiev - A Ukrainian who strangled his young lover, boiled her brains, ate
her tongue and kept her skull on his television set has been sentenced to death,
officials said on Tuesday.
Dmitri Diomin, 19, had initially confessed to strangling Tamara Kustova, 14, in
woods near Simferopol in the Crimea in November 1997, a court in Kiev was told.
A search of Diomin's home by the authorities also turned up another skull, objects used in Satanic rituals, and books about black magic, the officials said.

Occult Europe - Finland: Burnt churches and missing body parts
Jan 10/99- BBC - A bizarre murder case involving teenage members of a Satanist cult, is making sensational headlines in Finland.
Teenage Satanism sounds like some new fad dreamed up by bored 16-year-olds over a couple of beers just to annoy their parents. But in Scandanavia, Satanism is becoming less and less of a joke.
In Norway alone during the past couple of years, young Satanists have been suspected, and one or two convicted, of burning down perhaps half a dozen of the nation's oldest and most beautiful churches.
Others with links to the fast-growing neo-Nazi movement have been involved in violent attacks on immigrants and refugees.
Gruesome murders
Now a murder case in neighbouring Finland has cast a new and even more sinister light on the Satanist movement.
Four young people - a 17-year-old girl and three men aged 16 and 23 - have confessed to killing one of their associates. Only a few of their victim's body parts have been found.
Helsinki police are investigating other unsolved murders in the vicinity, including that of a dog which was found dismembered in the same flat as the latest human
victim.
Achmad Suradji was convicted at a court near the regional capital of Medan after several weeks of testimony from witnesses who said their relatives had disappeared after visiting him.
There were cheers from a large crowd in the courtroom as the verdict was read out. More than 100 people had packed into the small courtroom while as many followed the proceedings outside on a television screen
Suradji remained impassive throughout. His lawyers say he will appeal against the sentence.
The death penalty is rarely applied in Indonesia and it is not clear when, if ever, the sentence will be carried out.
Police had charged Suradji of strangling the women as part of a black magic ritual intended to increase his magical powers.
He was arrested on April 28 last year after a woman's body was found buried in a sugar cane field. She was last seen alive at his home.
Suradji allegedly told police that since 1986 he had killed 42 women as part of a ritual to improve his healing powers. Police have since unearthed all 42 bodies from the field.
The sorcerer said he began his killing spree after his late father contacted him in a dream and ordered him to murder 70 women in a black magic ritual.
After strangling his victims, Suradji claimed he drank their saliva, believing it would improve his powers as a sorcerer.
Suradji, who uses the alias Nasib Datuk Kelewang, was consulted by those seeking spiritual healing and good fortune. Many were thought to be seeking his help to make their husbands or boyfriends faithful.
One of his three wives, Tumini, is charged with complicity in the crimes and is currently on trial at a separate court there.

A graphic film about the case has already been released throughout Indonesia. But according to the BBC's correspondent, these gruesome killings appear to have made no impact on the appetite for mystical guidance here. Sorcerers say that since Indonesia's economic crisis began, they have never had so many customers.
