The Sad State of many Evangelical Churches
Purpose-driven churches are kind of like armies of farmers:
They know that they are an army, they know that they "can" fight. But they don’t really think that they are equipped for the fight, not being "professional" soldiers.
So, they sit around, and stand around, not doing anything. They rejoice in the fact that they are together, and they attempt to derive as much comfort from this, as if they had actually fought. But sitting on the sidelines, and fighting a battle...are simply not the same thing...
But you can hear those conversations:
- You, know we really should do something
- Yeah – you’re right we should
- No I mean about fighting the fight
- Yeah – I agree
- We should simply get our armor on, pick up our weapons, and go fight
- Yeah, that’s great. We should.... (long silence).
- I’ll go and get some more of the guys and we can talk about this.
- Okay, I’ll wait next to the campfire
And that is an example of what many evangelical churches do, and that is what it seems that most Purpose-driven churches do. They agree that 1) something should be done, and 2) that "someone" should do it.
But they don’t have enough gratitude to God or knowledge about the Bible. In fact most of them are too ashamed, or too busy, or too dense...to actually study it. So they have conversations with each other ...that they should study it, they should pray more, they should get together and really focus on spiritual things.... And they have this conversation in one form or another...just about every Sunday.
And what really comforts them...is the fact that if ever they actually start to make progress in one of these Sunday conversations, that the class, or the discussion will be over soon enough to prevent real change, and then they can repeat the process with someone else Next Sunday. Therefore the discussion never reach the stage of 1) solutions nor of 2) personal accountability. Those who want solutions want to talk about this. Those who are scared to discuss these issues often wish to give the impression of openness, but still hope to avoid the discussion(s). Fear is a strange master. [Matt 6: 24 No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other.]
Everybody knows that serious conversations in Sunday Church are handled this way, everybody sees this, everybody does this. Most of these churches are playing at church, rather than teaching those saved souls how to Impact their community for Jesus Christ. The notion that anyone actually wants to have an impact anywhere OUTSIDE the 4 Church Walls often scares most pastors. [Fear is a strange master].
The point is that the state of Christian churches reflects the weak and spineless state that many local Evangelical leaders have become. That is the result of something. It is happening for some reason: It seems to be the result of Not preaching and teaching true theology. But God’s theology and work changes lives.
And those who are serious about Christianity either are very frustrated by being in a church like that (which many evangelical churches are) or they leave, which is what most of the coming generations are doing by the millions....
And that is what happens when Evangelical pastors retain their Job and their Paycheck, but ABANDON their Calling, and also abandon the people that God entrusted to them.

"However, the church growth movement takes it much further, and through the process of continual incremental change (using the Hegelian dialectic over and over with the last synthesis becoming the new thesis – the “new fact” base, or “new reality’), the Word of God is gradually/incrementally changed from its original intent" ???
