Virginia: Fake Conservatives Stall pro-family Legislation

Agape Press - Feb 18/05 - A Virginia pro-family advocate says she wants people to know that lawmakers in that state are stonewalling on important issues. Victoria Cobb is the legislative director of the Richmond-based Family Foundation of Virginia. She points out that two important bills in the state's Senate have been delayed or defeated recently, not by recorded vote but by procedural maneuvering. Cobb says these bills, one having to do with homosexual adoption and the other dealing with religious liberties, were purposely stalled by the lawmakers. And it is becoming routine, she adds, for members of the State Legislature to try to hide their records with this kind of procedural sleight-of-hand. "Virginians are growing very weary of senators who are playing politics with their values," the pro-family leader says. "We have had situations where bills are getting re-referred to committees simply to make sure that it is harder to get them passed. This is something that is unacceptable to the people of Virginia, and we're going to make sure they know where these senators stand." Cobb hopes exposing the lawmakers' records will help put an end to their tactics of delaying or killing good bills through delay tactics, rather than by having the courage to vote against them.

Desecration as a Political Weapon

Back in 1999 artist Chris Ofili smeared elephant feces and pasted pornographic photographs on an image of the Virgin Mary and hung it in the Brooklyn Museum of Art. It caused a firestorm of protest. Olifi's detractors were outraged at the sacrilege. His defenders retorted with the predicable arguments citing freedom of expression and artistic autonomy but avoided any serious engagement with the real meaning of the piece.

Ofili's desecration is nothing new. In recent years we have seen "Piss Christ" where a crucifix was submerged in a jar of urine, Neonazis painting swastikas on synagogues, even Madonna simulating sex acts in a set designed as a church.

Shortly after the Bolshevik Revolution, Lenin ordered soldiers into Russian villages that resisted the imposition of the Communist yoke. Lenin discovered that religious faith informed much of the resistance. Especially troublesome was the teaching that the statutes governing human affairs were
subject to the higher judgment of God. It repudiated the Marxist denial of the ideal and everything it implied including the establishment of the state as the final arbiter of all human affairs.

Religious faith was a grave threat to Marxism and Lenin knew it. The soldiers struck at the heart of this faith by striking at the symbols that defined it.

The True Conservative: David Horowitz's Right Turn

David Horowitz, now one of America's most important conservative writers but once a New Left guru, recalls walking on the ocean beach at Hampton Bays in eastern Long Island. He wasn't enjoying a beautiful day or fishing or searching for seashells as other boys might be doing.

No, the 10-year-old Horowitz was "preoccupied with a speech I was preparing in my head" as sandpipers ran "up from the foam" and then followed it back down. The speech he was preparing was to none other than Harry S. Truman. It was "a long speech, and I went over it again and again in order to memorize it," Horowitz recalls.

What did this precocious boy want to tell the president of the United States at a time when the Cold War had become white hot and the communist empire was roaring at full throttle into Eastern Europe and China?

The War on the Cross

If the American Civil Liberties Union committed itself to advancing the rights of Christians and Jews as tirelessly as it does to rooting out Christian and Jewish images in the public square, perhaps its civil liberties credo would not seem so duplicitous.

Sadly, the evolution of "civil liberties" has yielded a corresponding erosion of respect for those pesky "traditional values"—and the religions with which they are associated—that threaten the new pioneers of social engineering.

If religious tradition is to be recognized, say the pioneers, it is only the religious tradition of a distant culture that deserves our respect. Thus fealty toward heathenism, the religion of a conquered people, and to the conquered people themselves, is fitting, as is abjuring the Judeo-Christian heritage that formed, dominates and buttresses American society. Evidence of this truism is no more apparent than in Los Angeles, where three recent lawsuits highlight a preference for ancient religions and hostility toward the largest faith practiced in America.

Death On Demand

David van Gend

The recent suicide of a Brisbane woman raises many important questions. Nancy Crick was not dying. She was not terminally ill, she did not have any trace of cancer, she was almost twice the body weight stated on her web site and gaining. And Nancy Crick did not die. She suicided, which avoids dying, avoids reading the final chapter of the human story for fear of what it might hold.

That fear is the key to understanding the "right to die" movement; it is the "afraid to die" movement. It is the "life has no meaning" movement. In "Search for Meaning", Carolyn Jones accompanies a friend through her process of dying. "The disfigurement of her illness was pitiful; it would have shocked no one if she had asked for death. But patiently she lived through her last days, until one evening, calmly, she took her last breath... It was a moment of heightened significance, almost excitement, certainly sacred. The sense was of a rite of passage safely traversed."

What a pitiful contrast to Mrs Crick's suicide. Family who could not bear to be present to witness the self-killing. Utterly alone even in company, since no one can look suicide in the eye. A moment of debased insignificance, except in the minds of Euthanasia Society activists triumphing ghoulishly over their media coup.

Yet Nancy Crick has not died in vain. She has exposed her doctor

The Storm over "Dark Alliance"

Anatomy of a Story: Crack, the Contras, and the CIA

by Peter Kornbluh

CJR - Jan/Feb/97 - Kornbluh is senior analyst at the National Security Archive, a public-interest documentation center in Washington, and co-author of "The Iran-Contra Scandal: A Declassified History."

After Gary Webb spent more than a year of intense investigative reporting and weeks of drafting, his editors at the San Jose Mercury News decided to run his three-part series late last August, when the nation's focus was divided between politics and vacation. The series, dark alliance: the story behind the crack explosion, initially "sank between the Republican and Democratic Conventions," Webb recalls. "I was very surprised at how little attention it generated."

Webb needn't have worried. His story subsequently became the most talked-about piece of journalism in 1996 and arguably the most famous -- some would say infamous -- set of articles of the decade. Indeed, in the five months since its publication, "Dark Alliance" has been transformed into what New York Times reporter Tim Weiner calls a "metastory" -- a phenomenon of public outcry, conspiracy theory, and media reaction that has transcended the original series itself.

The series, and the response to it, have raised a number of fundamental journalistic questions. The original reporting -- on the links between a gang of Nicaraguan drug dealers, CIA-backed counterrevolutionaries, and the spread of crack in California -- has drawn unparalleled criticism from The Washington Post, The New York Times, and the Los Angeles Times. Their editorial decision to assault, rather than advance, the Mercury News story has, in turn, sparked critical commentary on the priorities of those pillars of the mainstream press.

Yet in spite of the mainstream media, the allegations generated by the Mercury News continue to swirl, particularly through communities of color. Citizens and journalists alike are left to weigh the significant flaws of the piece against the value of putt ing a serious matter, one the press has failed to fully explore, back on the national agenda.

April 9 - 30, 2001

Greenpeace powerhouse David McTaggart--whose organization made millions from anti-toxic campaigns--was manufacturing gourmet extra virgin olive oil containing dioxins, at the time of his death, Toronto Free Press has discovered.

Tests for dioxins conducted on the late McTaggart's Pax Jani olive oil, conducted by Phillips Environmental at the request of TFP, not only indicate the presence of dioxins (2.06 parts per trillion), bottles containing the oil come with plastic seals.

Canada's Top Military Priority: Closure
by Arthur Weinreb

August 12, 2002

"Closure" is one of those cutesy little words that becomes trendy every now and again. First gaining prominence in the 90s, its primary use is for victims of crime and other catastrophes, who, feeling aggrieved and victimized, are supposed to take comfort upon being told that at some point, usually soon, they will have closure, whatever that means.

Closure, it seems, has now become a high priority in the Canadian Armed Forces and reached new heights in the "friendly fire" incident last April when four Canadian troops died after being fired upon by the Americans. The United States and Canada held separate inquiries into the occurrence and both found that the fault lay with the trigger happy pilot who dropped the bomb. After these inquiries were concluded, information was leaked to the media that the pilots were given permission to fire upon those on the ground, albeit that the authorization came seconds after the bomb was unleashed. This leaked information, if true, confirmed what many people felt; that the American pilots were simply being used as scapegoats.

In Canada, we’ll never know if the new information is correct or not. Upon being questioned, Defense Minister John McCallum indicated that he would not re-open the inquiry. The reason — the families of the dead and wounded soldiers needed closure. How 90s; how trendy; how ridiculous.

Canada is, or was, allegedly at war in Afghanistan. It is hard for the government to remember this when they have much more important things to deal with, for example, whether or not increasing the Trans Canada Highway in Newfoundland to four lanes is a sufficient legacy for our slowly outgoing prime minister. If we are or were at war, it seems it would be a tad more important to fully investigate what happened in Afghanistan and try to prevent future occurrences. But no, political correctness is more important than trying to reduce future loss of life, especially when those lives are military.

AUSTRALIA:  VICTIMS  OF VICTORIA'S RELIGIOUS TOLERANCE LAW

Australian Prime Minister Meets with Muslim Leaders in Canberra
By VOA News
23 August 2005

John Howard

VOA News - 23 Aug - Australian Prime Minister John Howard and Islamic community leaders have agreed to join forces to combat terrorism.

Following a meeting Tuesday in Canberra with 14 moderate Muslim leaders, Mr. Howard said there was a unanimous commitment by participants to cooperate in addressing any terrorist threat that may arise.

Among those attending the meeting was Ameer Ali, president of the Australian Federation of Islamic Councils. He said the focus of the conference was to find ways to keep extremist views from harming the country.

Mr. Howard has been criticized for not including more radical Islamic leaders in the meeting. He said he did not want to give the extremists a platform.

Evangelist's Efforts Key in Ban of Same-Sex 'Marriage' in Australia
God Provides Amazing Turnaround Down Under

By Rebecca Grace
April 19, 2005

(AgapePress) - As the battle over a constitutional marriage protection amendment rages throughout the United States, Australia's recent passage of a bill protecting traditional marriage is an exemplary step in the right direction for the Western world.

Although the initial attempt to ban homosexual marriage in Australia seemed hopeless, the new law was passed August 13, 2004, by the Australian Senate with a 38-7 vote, as reported by Baptist Press. The turn of events, viewed by Christians as an act of God, came about largely due to the grassroots efforts of Australian native Warwick Marsh, a worshipping evangelist and co-founder of the Fatherhood Foundation and Australian Heart Ministries.

"The battle was raging in the middle of the year [2004] in May and June," Marsh told the AFA Journal. "It looked like ... 'gay' marriage was a sure thing."

God's Outcome
"The whole thing went off really well," Marsh said. "It shocked the opposition, the Labor Party, and [it] completely did an abouts face .... They supported the government, and said 'We want to stop gay marriage.'"

Although he was hoping for a positive outcome, Marsh was shocked by the response from the opposition and never expected such an immediate change to take place.

"Within eight days of that fourth of August, a legal bill was passed in the Senate which said that marriage is between a man and a woman for life, excluding others," Marsh explained with excitement. "Really, all I can say is that it was an act of God."

And God's hand was obviously in the battle from the beginning. "As it happened, I had booked a men's prayer summit six months before on the 12th and 13th of August," Marsh explained. "And the bill passed while we were there to pray for it.

"So all glory has to go to God because God is God!" he added.

In addition, Marsh pinpointed unity as a key factor in the success of the constitutional marriage amendment. "We didn't care who got the credit," he said. "We worked together."

Australia: CDP tells clergy to get political

Aus- 2004 - Former educator Phil Lamb and newly appointed State Director of the Christian Democratic Party (CDP) has told NSW church leaders to ‘wake up’ and get involved in politics, claiming many pastors withhold information from their congregations about Christians who are standing for election in public office.

But the Sydney Anglican has also admitted his party suffers from an ‘image problem’ with churches.
Mr Lamb used his induction service last month to challenge church leaders to ‘teach the biblical view’ and ‘pray publicly’ for Christians in parliament. There is a lack of teaching from the Bible about the role of Christians in public life, he said.
Mr Lamb referred to Romans 13 in stating that pastors “have used this passage as a calm assertion that Christians do not need to be involved in the process of Government, and that it is not the role of the church to support, pray for, or encourage them.”
“Somehow this infers that if we pray a prayer for our Governments that is somehow sufficient.”
He called on Christians to encourage their pastors to teach a Christian worldview of Government.
“Don’t be trapped to believe that Christianity and politics don’t mix,” he said.
In a major shake up of the Party, Mr Lamb joined the management team with the Rev Fred Nile and the Rev Dr Gordon Moyes, CDP’s elected Members of Parliament in NSW.
“My goal is to gather much broader support for CDP, and I will aim for seven per cent of the Vote [1]’s in 2007,” Mr Lamb said. “We will not have just two Members of Parliament, but three, four or even five MPs holding the balance of power in the Upper House.”
In last year’s State election only three per cent of voters gave their [1] vote to CDP.
“The Christian Democratic Party is the only Christian political party throughout Australia that represents Christian values in parliament, yet so many people who hold to those same values do not support CDP,” Mr Lamb told church leaders at his induction.
“I intend to find out why that is, and turn around the CDP so that we will have much broader support and the balance of power in the NSW Upper House in 2007.”
Mr Lamb, who attends St Faith’s, Narrabeen, plans to work on voters by researching community attitudes towards the party. He was unwilling to speculate on what this research might reveal, but did acknowledge the party “may need to change the way it communicates with its members and the community”. The party may need to change its public image, he said.
Despite the ambivalent views from churches, the new State Director has urged churchgoers to vote for CDP to ensure Christian values are upheld in all forthcoming legislation. It was a view expounded by his colleague, Dr Moyes. “The independent Christians [in NSW, the CDP] are the only people who can speak freely for Christian values and debate and argue to uphold our traditional values,” Dr Moyes claimed. “The amount of work we face is enormous, and we need a strong party structure and input from concerned Christians to strengthen our arm. Phil Lamb has arrived at a crucial time in our nation’s history.”

Christian parties have a role: Jensen

Date: October 17 200

Australia - Anglican Archbishop of Sydney Peter Jensen has maintained his silence on his brother Phillip's attack on the Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams, but has weighed into the debate on

religious groups in government.

Following the Assemblies of God-affiliated Family First party's strong showing at last week's federal election,

Dr Jensen said people with strong views on sexual morality and abortion who felt disempowered by the "previous political ethos are organising to make their views known".

"Whether it's wise for them to set up their own political parties, that's another discussion," he said. "But it's an interesting and significant event."

Dr Jensen said he favoured major secular parties as a way of governing Australia but was not opposed to the emergence of smaller parties.

"The development of these smaller Christian parties is a way of the population saying to the major parties, 'You have neglected an element of your constituency,' " he said.

Dr Jensen said a minister of the gospel was not a politician and they had separate jobs to do, but that where the interests of the spirit coincided with the interests of the Government, church leaders would be likely to speak up. But he said he did not take sides. "I want to speak for Jesus, not for any political party."

Dr Jensen said he could not comment on statements made by his brother, the Dean of Sydney, who said Dr Williams was a theological prostitute and should resign.

Australia training its spies in Middle East: espionage chief

Dec 8/04- There have been no terrorist attacks in Australia but Australian police, working with ASIO, have arrested a number of people over the past year with alleged links to the Al-Qaeda network responsible for the September 11 attacks.

One of these, British-born Islamic convert Jack Roche, pleaded guilty to plotting a truck-bomb attack on the Israeli embassy in Canberra on orders from Al-Qaeda-linked Islamic militants.

The conservative government of Prime Minister John Howard has spent billions of dollars enhancing Australia's counter-terrorism effort since September 11 and an October 2002 suicide bombing of a resort area on the Indonesian island of Bali which killed 202 people, 88 of them Australian.

Australia passes tough snoop laws

SYDNEY (AFP) - Dec 9/04 - Australia's parliament has passed toughened anti-terror laws after the conservative government successfully argued its increased majority in October elections gave it a mandate to introduce the previously rejected measures.

The laws, which had been rejected in the Senate because of civil liberties concerns, give counter-terrorism authorities more power to use listening devices and intercept emails and text messages.

They also prevent the release of classified information during court hearings of terrorism cases.

Attorney General Philip Ruddock said Australia's main intelligence agency, the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation, would now be able to carry out security assessments on the use of the fertiliser ammonium nitrate, which he described as a "product of choice for bomb making" by regional extremist group Jemaah Islamiyah.

Ruddock said the passing of the new laws delivered on an election promise and foreshadowed further changes when parliament resumes in the New Year.

So it's hazardous partnering patterns that are screwing up our birthrates, say the researchers. Increasing numbers of women waste precious child-rearing years in de facto relationships and end up partnerless as their fertility declines. The number of partnerless women in their 30s nearly doubled between 1986 and 2001, according to Birrell's data.

This group is now missing the key ingredient that encouraged them to start families and have more children: the stability and commitment provided by marriage.

Australian Aborigines to get petrol if they wash their children

SYDNEY (AFP) - Dec 8/04 - Australia's conservative government has offered to supply a remote Aboriginal township with fuel if parents agreed to wash their children, under a controversial plan to end health problems plaguing indigenous communities.

Critics labelled the deal patronising and discriminatory, while supporters said it was an innovative solution to endemic poor health among Aborigines, who form Australia's most disadvantaged community.

Under the deal, the Mulan community in the Outback of Western Australia state will receive a 172,000 dollar (132,400 US) grant to acquire petrol pumps, a move expected to generate jobs by making the settlement a more attractive destination for tourists.

In return, Mulan residents agreed to ensure their children shower daily and wash their faces twice a day, to empty household rubbish bins twice weekly and carry out home pest control four times a year.

It is an extension of the government's policy of "mutual obligation", which aims to eradicate decades of welfare dependency among Australia's 400,000 Aborigines.

Australia - Sidney - Secret toxic threat uncovered
By Eamonn Duff
June 16 2002
The Sun-Herald

Sun-Her/Jul16/02 - A secret State Government report, recovered after almost 20 years, has exposed evidence of a massive cover-up which threatened thousands of lives in Sydney.

In 1983, a study of the Botany Industrial Complex recommended that thousands of south Sydney residents be evacuated and their homes bulldozed because of fears of a chemical catastrophe.

But not only was the advice ignored, Botany Bay Council is still selling land in areas described as high-risk - without informing the buyers.

Olivera Erturk's Hillsdale home was among those listed for resumption in 1983. When The Sun-Herald showed her the report, she said: "They have gambled with my life for 20 years. How am I supposed to react? This is an absolute outrage."

Botany Bay mayor Ron Hoenig, who was head of the council when the report was compiled, said: "There was some concern about whether or not the population would panic."

Residents at the time were living next to chlorine plants, pesticide plants and an oil refinery, and in 1980 a shipping container full of chlorine exploded at ICI, sending a cloud of toxic gas across the area.

Australia in grip of water crisis

Nov 8/04 - BBC - There is a warning that some of Australia's major cities could run out of drinking water.

Much of this arid continent is in the grip of one of the driest periods in living memory.

"We're in a sustained drought now and if that goes on for another year, we're going to have real problems," Professor Peter Cullen, leader of the Wentworth Group of Concerned Scientists, told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

"Some of our major (cities) are really in a race at the moment to see who's going to run out of water first."

A big worry is that in such a parched country, water supplies in many Australian cities cannot cope with rapid population growth.

Levels at the Warragamba dam that provides 80% of Sydney's water have reached record lows.

Recent heavy rain has helped, but the biggest and probably the most thirsty city in Australia needs a steady drenching of 40mm of rain to fall in the catchment areas every day for a week before dams return to "comfortable" levels.

It is proof that Australia's water crisis has moved from the dusty outback and into the suburbs and towns.

Australia 'drowning in salt'

Jun 29/99 - BBC - Large areas of Australia are dying, literally drowning in salt, according to scientists.

The BBC's correspondent in Australia, Michael Peschardt, says widespread deforestation has caused the water table to rise, lifting thousands of tons of salt into the top soil.

Nothing can grow in the resulting desert.

Since white settlement of Australia started in the 18th century an estimated 15 billion trees have been cut down to make way for farms or urban development.

The trees held the rising water levels in check, their roots sucking up millions of gallons of water which then evaporated in the hot sun.

When the trees are felled the water table rises and the top soil becomes salty.

Communist for Councillor - really !

June 23, 2003

There’s nothing wrong with a "card-carrying Commie" joining city council, according to Toronto Star reporter Bruce DeMara.

"Tongues have been wagging at city hall about the public trustee’s dark past as a card-carrying Commie (not that there’s anything wrong with that) since Paula Fletcher signed on to run in Ward 30, formerly held by ex-councillor and federal NDP leader Jack Layton," DeMara wrote in his Monday column, The Skinny at City Hall.

DeMara labeled the tongue wagging "a smear campaign," while admitting, "there’s some smoke to go with this fire."

Elected leader of the Communist Party of Canada (CPC) in Manitoba, in April 1981, Fletcher served in the post for about five years.

Somehow the Toronto District School Board trustee--now moving on up to run for a council seat--didn’t consider it important to tell Ward 30 voters about her long-time commitment to the CPC.
