What we think of the Eastern Orthodox
What we think of the Eastern Orthodox
We thought we would share this with you, so that those who are interested in truth, can at least Truthfully report that this is what we said...about the subject
1. We acknowledge - at the outset - that we have not arrived. We do not have all of the answers, and we are not suggesting that we do.
2.We acknowledge that among the Eastern Orthodox (alive today) that there are some good thinkers. For the record, we want to say that we LIKE the Eastern Orthodox. We are not sure why we would have to state that. Our website reflects a concern for how the Orthodox are actually treated by their leaders and the Patriarchates. (And we believe that Orthodox laymen are usually treated pretty poorly by their leaders). But as for the Orthodox people - we Like them.
We will continue to defend and speak out FOR the Human Rights of everyone and especially of the Eastern Orthodox. We do not wish to censor anyone. We hope that ideas of true Freedom and Responsible Democratic Values would be something that anyone claiming to be Christian in any way (whether Eastern Orthodox, Protestant or Roman Catholic) - would seek to foster, encourage and promote...at all times, in all ways, and in all circumstances and in all countries.
Whether we agree with what is being said or not, we will continue to speak up both for the rights of Roman Catholics and the rights of the Eastern Orthodox to express themselves. Ideas are not something to fear.
As opposed to the Patriarchates - we disagree with the premise that the Eastern Orthodox should be treated like children and told simply to accept that something is a mystery, when there is a wealth of historic material and documents, that would add deep knowledge to those Eastern Orthodox who are looking for it.
3. We believe that Most Eastern Orthodox can be divided into 2 Categories:
The parts of the Eastern Orthodox branches that are dying out, and the parts that are growing.
The parts that are dying out are the parts that are Traditional and ethnic. The parts that are growing are fueled mostly by Evangelical converts. (However, to suggest that most of those converts understood either what they converted From or what they converted To - remains to be established).
4. We believe that most Eastern Orthodox are intellectually lazy. If you get offended when someone says this to you, you have just proven the point. The Easy or the LAZY thing to do ...is to react by getting offended. The much more ascetic or disciplined approach would be to think about that, consider the possibility, and attempt to formulate some kind of intellectual response.
5.We believe that the Eastern Orthodox Church can be roughly divided into 2 Groups:
A. Leaders (at the Patriarchate level) who know what is going on in their own denomination, and
B. followers and laymen who understand very little about their Church, especially in America.
6. We believe that most of the converts to Eastern Orthodoxy are sincere in their desire to try something new, sincere in their desire to try the "new" thing, the "in" thing, or anything that they have not tried before. While the excitement is understandable, spiritual faith cannot be sustained on emotionalism or excitement.
7. We believe that most of the converts to Eastern Orthodoxy have almost no idea how to find Truth or how to find God. The general attitude that we find in those who write to us - includes the following:
- Eastern Orthodoxy is something I am trying out,
- I will see how it makes me feel. If I feel good, then I will think it is good.
- I will place my faith in my local priest, and put my trust and hope in his confidence in that Church. If HE believes it, then I will have confidence also, and I will take whatever is said...at face value without further questions.
8.We believe that young Evangelicals and young Eastern Orthodox share a few things in common:
- a lack of understanding of how to do do real historical research.
- a lack of understanding of how to differentiate historical sources (good ones from bad ones)
- an impatience for quick answers, which [ when it comes to God] tends to demonstrate a strong personal arrogance about what God "better do for you"...in the next few days
- a willing spirit of pride about "being right" [a Common accusation against Patriarchates] rather than a humble spirit of gratitude, coupled with a sincere prayer to God that if one is deceived in any way, that God would reveal this very clearly.
9. We believe that the Patriachates are theologically inconsistent. If they wish to be theologically inconsistent (meaning that they do not agree with each other) - that is perfectly their right. But it seems intellectually dishonest...to say that they are part of an "INDIVISIBLE" church, when the various patriarchates - historically, split off one from the other, because of differences - Major ones - that are Theological [such as the question of whether Jesus Christ has one nature or two].
10. We believe that the Patriarchates - as a rule do not care about the people that they have been entrusted with.
What this means is that the OLDER the Patriarchate or the LOCAL influence of the particular Eastern Orthodox Church, the LEAST likely they are to specifically help their own churchgoers. This would apply to NOT helping the poor in other countries (such as Belarus, Georgia, Ukraine, Greece, etc), and generally have a demeanor of a LACK OF KINDNESS and a deliberate lack of personal flexibility.
11.We believe that the Patriarchates frequently engage in Politics and in the acquisition of Great Personal Wealth, which they do not "personally" claim, but rather make use of, to the tune of millions and millions of dollars for themselves.
12.We believe that the Eastern Orthodox Churchgoers in the West are in denial about the Eastern Orthodox Church and its willing collaboration with Communist Country leaders - who emprisoned hundreds of thousands of the true Eastern Orthodox Faithful. Many Eastern Orthodox priests that were collaborators are STILL in the SAME positions that they were in the Communist days (or they have been promoted).
13. We believe that - despite claims to the contrary, that Eastern Orthodox Priest in the U.S. and in the West have a particular RELIANCE on Books, Documents, Theological works that are ROMAN CATHOLIC. Those sources would be - those that are:
- Roman Catholic in Origin
- Roman Catholic in Theology
- Published by Roman Catholic Publishers
- Published in an official capacity of the Roman Catholic Church
To whatever extent this is true, (and we believe it is true of probably 80% of materials used by the Eastern Orthodox in the USA today), the Eastern Orthodox Church is ROMAN CATHOLIC - Theologically speaking.
[And please don't "explain" that the Eastern Orthodox are not formally Roman Catholic because they do not officially have a Pope. If that is what you would write to us, then that would only demonstrate how much you might not understand about Roman Catholicism - There is MUCH more to Roman Catholicism than simply the ONE issue of "the Pope"]. [ For the Record, we do NOT dislike Roman Catholics. In fact - we like them. Most Roman Catholics are sincere and hard working, good people. It is the VATICAN BUREAUCRATS and how they have twisted things...that presents the problem] .
14. Disagreements about Eastern Orthodox (and any related subject) are NOT personal, and just because you are reading or interacting with people who may DISAGREE with you about Eastern Orthodoxy (or offer an Alternative point of view) does NOT mean that you are being subjected to "Hate".
15. As to our motive, our motive is to get historic material into the hands of the public, to raise questions, to raise awareness, to engage in debates and conversations, to seek truth, and to learn from those who are willing and able to teach us, just as we try to pass along some of what we hope we have learned...to others.
16. We take responsibility for being an Irreverent site. We don't take ourselves too seriously, but we DO take the Genuine Historic Materials and Historic Books and Documents VERY seriously. [We think that your spiritual wellbeing and Eternal PEACE or Lack of it - is a matter to be Serious About]. But, If you think that you have reached people who will bow just because something has the illusion of being "old", think again. Authenticity is what speaks to us.
There are thousands of Fake relics, and there are many new translations that claim to be old, but it remains REASONABLE for us to ask those who claim to be Orthodox ...to be able to JUSTIFY and explain the reason for the hope (spiritually) that is within them. IF you are not interested in personal growth, or IF you are only interested in your Instant answers, or Instant Spirituality, you will not be here at this website for very long, and you will not stay long in almost any spiritual place. (The issue is knowing which spiritual path is the right one).
[IF - IF - that is your perspective - you already know that you have trouble dealing with the personal pain "angle" of spirituality, you already know that you can barely stand to be by yourself and dwell in silence because you are so used to the NOISE of the Culture and the different kinds of Entertainment. To be with yourself, to have to face a personal emptiness scares you, and you will gravitate towards spirituality that has all kinds of experience ...that you will accept...no matter whether the source is good or evil...because you are willing to trade your soul for any experience, just so long as it brings you instant relief.]
17. In discussing issues or questions or comments with us, please do not place on us the expectation of having to revere (show reverence) to what you HAVE BEEN TOLD is old. If we genuinely thought that 90% of what is Eastern Orthodox were either Genuine, or Authentic in the sense of "Authentic Christianity" - we would obviously take a much more sober attitude. But our conversations with the Orthodox have led us to opposite conclusions...at least so far. (Yes, many of us were Eastern Orthodox before also, but the topic here is the conversations that we have had with those who have written to us here).
18. We are not here to make fun of you, and we do not make fun of those who have questions. But we do hope that you will respect yourself enough (and many don't ) that you would be willing to consider some of the serious and Difficult questions about the History and the Origins of Eastern Orthodoxy - as it is taught today.
19.We know that there are a few websites/blogs that will simply pass judgement on us (most without even emailing us) and demonstrate that they are not serious about their personal faith, their historical research, or their quest for answers. We do answer most of the Email we receive, (unless it is willfully hostile and not interested in dialogue).
20. Most people are not interested in truth. Most people are interested in comfort, and in instant answers. One would think that simply being "Eastern Orthodox" ...would take care of that, but we have found that it does not. But maybe Eastern Orthodoxy will be a stopping point on the journey towards God's truth. IF that is the case, then the existence of the Eastern Orthodox Church would be doing the world a favor.
21. We believe that the Patriarchates think of the Eastern Orthodox Church - as a POLITICAL agency, in the TEMPORAL sense of the word. We believe that the Eastern Orthodox Patriarchates are working - very hard - to help secure many of the geographical Holy Places in the Middle East, for the permanent disposition and use by the VATICAN, who will reward the Eastern Orthodox Patriarchates ...very generously. Remember, the VATICAN is the Church that has the LEGAL STATUS of a NATION-STATE. This means that the VATICAN can sign TREATIES with Nations ...in a way that the various Eastern Patriarchates cannot.
(we do not expect you to agree, but that is our perspective, which fits in with Point # 13).
22. We believe that - in the West - the Eastern Orthodox Church pretty much tricks people by TALKING ABOUT the Early Church Councils, and passing along false translations of the Church Councils, which - incidentally - were translated by PROTESTANTS. After talking ABOUT the Early Church, the Eastern Orthodox leader then skip to the present and try to point to buildings about 200 years old. But the Eastern Orthodox Church as a rule is MISSING the documentation between the ACTUAL Early Christians, and the Eastern Orthodox Church of Today.
But since many people today know just very little about History, then they are not in a position to know that the information they are being presented (by the WEALTHY Eastern Orthodox Patriarchates) is false.
We believe that having BELIEFS on the basis of True Historical Research, and genuine Documentation, is much more fulfilling and satisfying and Authentic, than simply having "beliefs" about Eastern Orthodoxy, because you simply chose this as your Next Fad, or because your friend is Also an Eastern Orthodox.
23. We Agree that many people will read this page, and be afraid to seek further. People fear truth, and do not trust themselves or God to be able to find it. Each of us must make our choice, and God will hold each and every one of us personally and individually responsible, for ever, for the Truth that we do - or do not - decide to be willing to find and confront. The True God of Christianity is Not afraid of Hard questions (though many Patriarchates are...which is why they insist on saying that "Everything is a Mystery...").
24. Having Confidence in Authentic Spirituality is having confidence in God, that He is a rewarder of those who Diligently seek Him. Many people are not afraid of answers in the "Final" sense, so that is good. But what many people are Afraid of, is that they will search for Truth and for Answers, and they will find God, and God will not Like them and God will not LOVE them. But that is an UN-FOUNDED fear (even though if this is your fear, it is a pretty normal one).
The Fact is that GOD IS LOVE, and GOD CAN be found, and neither the 5% solution to God often found in Evangelicalism is the answer, nor the 6% found in Eastern Orthodoxy. Truth needs to be sustained by TRUTH, real answers.
Real answers are those which are honest, god-seeking, permanent life-changing, objective, real answers to how God works and how Christianity Can meet our personal needs, and how God has truly done this. Finding security in rituals that are supposedly old (but actually are not - and not from Chrysostom either) - brings neither genuine Peace nor lasting Spiritual Comfort.
25. Saying you have found the answers is easy. Being able to demonstrate that, or to change when the Eternal questions need to be answered, THAT - is a different matter. God calls us to be seekers of Truth, His Truth.
26. Our agenda is very straightforward: to encourage people to Ask Questions and learn For Themselves more about their own faith and historic Christianity. We do not push one particular denomination. You will notice that we cover multitudes of denominations on our website. It is very easy for people to think that they are "part" of something, these days, without researching it, without thinking-in-depth about it. Most people - are afraid to think. It is almost as if they believe that if they think a little too hard, the God they believe in ...is going to disapear. Is God really that small, that insignificant, that Powerless ? God says that
II Timothy 1:7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.
If we are following God, and trying to, the Desire of our Heart will be to learn more About Him. If we are only Pretending to follow God, we will want quick and instant relief, and we will not care What the source is. Sadly many people these days care much more about "Instant Gratification" than they do about God and what He really thinks.
We understand that in many cases, there are always plenty of people who are willing to be Blind Sheep and especially in the Eastern Orthodox Church. God never tells us to trust Spiritual Leaders blindly. The Bible teaches us to evaluate them, to question them, to try to ask questions. God is the one who has given us a SOUND MIND. That does not mean that we should turn our mind OFF, but instead that we should use it.
To ask serious questions of Orthodox Leaders is justified and appropriate. How many questions did Jesus ask of the Spiritual Leaders of his age ? many.
Those Leaders who are ALSO seeking truth and genuine historic facts will WELCOME your seeking and your questions. They will not only congratulate you on the question(s), but ACTUALLY try to provide answers that Can be documented.
When you say to your Orthodox Priest : Can you show me this particular
Tradition, and can you tell me what is the Oldest Book that documents this ? Can
you show me from sources that are NOT Roman Catholic if you teach that the
Eastern Orthodox Church is Not Roman Catholic ? Can you share with me when
did the Patriarchates change from speaking Ancient
Greek to Latin ? Do we have records from that time
period ? How can we know that what is said ABOUT the Eastern Orthodox Church is
true ? Where is the Documentation ?
Those questions show and demonstrate a willingness to Seek Truth.
This is NOT a popularity contest.
Many people like their "religion" because their friends do. Finding and Seeking God can be a lonely, challenging or time-consuming path.
When we die, and our Eternal Destiny begins - that is when we will care most about the actions that we have or have not - taken to find God and be sure that the answers we find are genuine. God is not afraid of those who ask questions.
And if any of these points have given you some ideas or thoughts for reflection,
then maybe the stop was worth it.

Christian Conversions - According to the Bible - Can NEVER be forced.
Any Conversion to Christianity which would be "Forced" would NOT be recognized by God. It is in
His True and KIND nature, that those who come to Him and choose to believe in Him, must come to Him OF
THEIR OWN FREE WILL.
Don't Let anyone tell you that Christians support Forced Conversions.
That is False. True Christianity is NEVER forced.
