Guardian - UK - I will sleep and dream of great danger" ran the opening line of an email from a friend in Brooklyn. It was 4am eastern standard time and the last hope of a Kerry victory - or, more precisely, a Bush defeat - had dissolved into the night. "I believe the field day Bush will have for the next four years will create a nightmare worse than anything this country has seen."

Make no mistake, the fear and despair evoked across the globe by the US election result are shared by many millions of US citizens. Indeed, their grief, their frustration, has a peculiar intensity - because there's no loathing like the loathing within families. The 55 million Kerry voters who went to the polls primarily motivated by a burning desire to dump Bush are no more reconciled to his rule this morning than they were a few days ago.

Bush will claim a mandate, but there's no reason we should accept the claim. The result confirms that this is a wartime leader who does not speak for, or enjoy, the confidence of half the population.

There will be those in Europe who will seize on this result to urge us to reconcile ourselves to the superpower and its peculiar ways. And it will be claimed that a refusal to do so is tantamount to "anti-Americanism". This charge has been fouling the atmosphere since 9/11. It is alleged that the left or Europe is blindly hostile to America and Americans. As a US passport-holder long resident in London, I know that this charge is baloney.

Anti-Americanism has become a catch-all charge levied against anyone who engages in a radical critique of America's global power, its sway over the lives of billions who had no vote in Tuesday's election. People rebel against US hegemony for the same reasons they rebelled against the dominance of earlier imperial powers, not out of a distaste for the culture of the rulers but out of an objection to undemocratic, unaccountable, self-serving rule by remote elites of whatever culture.

What does Freedom Really Mean?

  - We’ve all heard the words democracy and freedom used countless times, especially in the context of our invasion of Iraq.  They are used interchangeably in modern political discourse, yet their true meanings are very different. 

George Orwell wrote about “meaningless words” that are endlessly repeated in the political arena*.  Words like “freedom,” “democracy,” and “justice,” Orwell explained, have been abused so long that their original meanings have been eviscerated.  In Orwell’s view, political words were “Often used in a consciously dishonest way.”  Without precise meanings behind words, politicians and elites can obscure reality and condition people to reflexively associate certain words with positive or negative perceptions.  In other words, unpleasant facts can be hidden behind purposely meaningless language.  As a result, Americans have been conditioned to accept the word “democracy” as a synonym for freedom, and thus to believe that democracy is unquestionably good.

The problem is that democracy is not freedom.  Democracy is simply majoritarianism, which is inherently incompatible with real freedom.  Our founding fathers clearly understood this, as evidenced not only by our republican constitutional system, but also by their writings in the Federalist Papers and elsewhere.  James Madison cautioned that under a democratic government, “There is nothing to check the inducement to sacrifice the weaker party or the obnoxious individual.”  John Adams argued that democracies merely grant revocable rights to citizens depending on the whims of the masses, while a republic exists to secure and protect pre-existing rights.  Yet how many Americans know that the word “democracy” is found neither in the Constitution nor the Declaration of Independence, our very founding documents? 

A truly democratic election in Iraq, without U.S. interference and U.S. puppet candidates, almost certainly would result in the creation of a Shiite theocracy.  Shiite majority rule in Iraq might well mean the complete political, economic, and social subjugation of the minority Kurd and Sunni Arab populations.  Such an outcome would be democratic, but would it be free?  Would the Kurds and Sunnis consider themselves free?  The administration talks about democracy in Iraq, but is it prepared to accept a democratically-elected Iraqi government no matter what its attitude toward the U.S. occupation?  Hardly. For all our talk about freedom and democracy, the truth is we have no idea whether Iraqis will be free in the future.  They’re certainly not free while a foreign army occupies their country.  The real test is not whether Iraq adopts a democratic, pro-western government, but rather whether ordinary Iraqis can lead their personal, religious, social, and business lives without interference from government.

Simply put, freedom is the absence of government coercion.  Our Founding Fathers understood this, and created the least coercive government in the history of the world.  The Constitution established a very limited, decentralized government to provide national defense and little else.  States, not the federal government, were charged with protecting individuals against criminal force and fraud.  For the first time, a government was created solely to protect the rights, liberties, and property of its citizens. Any government coercion beyond that necessary to secure those rights was forbidden, both through the Bill of Rights and the doctrine of strictly enumerated powers.  This reflected the founders’ belief that democratic government could be as tyrannical as any King. 

Few Americans understand that all government action is inherently coercive.  If nothing else, government action requires taxes.  If taxes were freely paid, they wouldn’t be called taxes, they’d be called donations.  If we intend to use the word freedom in an honest way, we should have the simple integrity to give it real meaning: Freedom is living without government coercion.  So when a politician talks about freedom for this group or that, ask yourself whether he is advocating more government action or less.

The political left equates freedom with liberation from material wants, always via a large and benevolent government that exists to create equality on earth.  To modern liberals, men are free only when the laws of economics and scarcity are suspended, the landlord is rebuffed, the doctor presents no bill, and groceries are given away.  But philosopher Ayn Rand (and many others before her) demolished this argument by explaining how such “freedom” for some is possible only when government takes freedoms away from others.

Paid for Anti-Americanism: Australian Tells of  $ Bounties in Iraq

Dec 13/04 -CANBERRA, Australia - Contract killers are being offered as little as $50 to target coalition soldiers in Iraq (news - web sites), the commander of Australian forces said in a newspaper interview published Sunday.

Air Commodore Greg Evens, who took command of Australia's 350 soldiers in Iraq last month, said Iraqi insurgents were hiring assassins from neighboring Middle Eastern countries with the promise of cash payments for every soldier they killed.

"This is a difficult adversary," he told Sydney's The Sunday Telegraph newspaper. "The insurgency is not a coherent force."

He added, "We are seeing zealots brought in from outside Iraq and paid $50 for contract killings. These forces are a general threat to the coalition.

Anti-Americanism

Anti-Americanism continues to grow more powerful and to mutate into increasingly bizarre and pathological forms. After 9/11, masses of people from all over the world not only celebrated America’s tragedy, but even blamed the victims rather than the perpetrators for the terrorist attacks.

As the Bush administration attempts to build a coalition against Saddam Hussein, it becomes evident that the American President’s efforts are frustrated by the vehement strain of anti-Americanism in the international environment. And let’s not kid ourselves: anti-Americanism is no dying force in America itself.

To be sure, members of the fifth column in the U.S., led by such radical gurus as Noam Chomsky, continue to hate and despise their own country and society like never before.

The war on terror, therefore, must not distract us from one powerful and disturbing truth: that today there are more America loathers outside of militant Islam than inside of it.

In this context, it is time, once again, to take a close look at anti-Americanism. What are its causes? What new forms is it shaping into? What are its consequences to our future? The Anti-American: Medea Benjamin

There is scarcely a calamity, an injustice, or an act of outright barbarism occurring anywhere on earth, that Leftists cannot somehow trace to the doorstep of the United States. In their view, all attacks against our country are understandable, if not laudable, retaliatory strikes against an aggressive, arrogant nation that has too often tried to bully the rest of the world. Conversely, any American response – be it with military or law-enforcement measures – is seen as a form of aggression that will only provoke further anti-Americanism and thereby perpetuate "the cycle of violence."

A leading proponent of this view is the outspoken Medea Benjamin, who in 1988 founded the activist organization Global Exchange, and in 2000 was the Green Party candidate for US Senate in California. In her view, America’s war on terror is, itself, a form of terrorism. Late last year Ms. Benjamin took a group of Americans, each of whom had lost loved ones in the 9-11 attacks, to Afghanistan to meet people whose relatives had perished in the US bombing campaign there. She returned from that trip weighted down with photographs and heart-rending tales of Afghan children who had been injured, killed, or orphaned by the war. "We must insist that governments stop taking innocent lives in the name of seeking justice for the loss of other innocent lives," she said.

This remarkable characterization of the US military effort implies, of course, that the Bush Administration defines justice, at least in part, as the retributive taking of innocent lives – rather than as an effort to bring down deadly terrorist networks like al-Qaeda. Benjamin’s other planted axiom is that merely because some innocent Afghans were killed by American bombs, the events that brought about their deaths were morally equivalent to the attacks of 9-11. Strangely, however, she has not a word to say about the Taliban’s culpability in forcing the war by refusing to hand over bin Laden and his henchmen – as President Bush demanded – during the weeks preceding the American air strikes.

Instead, Ms. Benjamin asserts that Bush "has responded to the violent attack of 9-11 with the notion of perpetual war . . . a war in Afghanistan that included dropping over 20,000 bombs, many of which missed their targets and led to the killing and maiming of thousands of civilians." Global Exchange, she explains, "hired a survey team in Afghanistan that documented over 800 civilian deaths and many more wounded." Yet she does not acknowledge that this number is remarkably small, given the massive firepower dropped upon this nation of 26 million people. Had the US been truly careless or malicious, casualties could easily have numbered in the millions.

Leftists like Ms. Benjamin can allow no American error to go un-condemned – no matter how noble our nation’s intentions might have been.

Why Multiculturalists Hate America

College course selection catalogues for the current academic year list such "multicultural" courses as Penn's "American Racism," Harvard's "Ebonics: Myths and Facts," and UMass-Amherst's "The Social Construction of Whiteness and Women," which centers "primarily on the U.S." Lest any student feel shanghaied by the compulsory activism in this last course, the class description notes: "Students work in groups to design and implement activist projects."

The common denominator of such "multicultural" courses is a lack of truth in advertising. Their emphasis is monocultural, not multicultural. That is to say that the focus is exclusively on bemoaning some aspect of Western society. Ostensibly, multiculturalism celebrates overlooked aspects of foreign cultures. In practice, it serves as a propaganda tool of the domestic Left to denigrate America and the West.

Real multiculturalism-an honest look at societies outside our own-would reveal precisely what campus multiculturalists attempt to hide: the fact that some cultures are better than others. This is why the American Left ignores other cultures, and instead focuses a jaundiced eye upon America. Remarkably, this endeavor is labeled "multiculturalism." In my new book, Why the Left Hates America: Exposing the Lies That Have Obscured Our Nation's Greatness, I examine other cultures in detail. What's revealed doesn't quite fit with the Left's ideological preconceptions about foreign societies.

Hate America Poetry Class

While Americans and Iraqis cheered when Saddam Hussein was dragged from his spider hole in December, there were, obviously, a few notable exceptions. While Saddam loyalists and anti-American Arabs pouted in gloom and doom, back in the U.S. an anti-American poetry hit parade, entitled “My America,” was held shortly after Saddam’s capture. It was the grand finale of San Francisco State University’s fall semester.

How the Process Works: Teachers Teaching Hatred

School Teachers' Federation, representing teachers in public high schools, printed an article, Why America is Hated, in its December newsletter. The newsletter was distributed to 6,500 teachers, as a 'resource' to stimulate discussion in the classroom.

The newsletter--which conveniently operates at arm's length from the union's executive, according to board members--was derided by the Canadian Jewish Congress as historically inaccurate and slanted against the United States and Israel.

Utopia versus U.S. 

The June issue of National Geographic contains one of the rare honest looks at India. The article "India's Untouchables" gives a shocking picture of some of the most persecuted people on earth.

For far too long, India has been one of a number of countries used by the intelligentsia to denigrate the United States. The image or the insinuation has been that we are materialistic, they are spiritual; we are violent, they are peaceful -- and so on.

Instead of picturing every country as it is, warts and all, too often the picture of the United States has been warts only and other countries -- whether India, Cuba, China, or at one time the Soviet Union -- have had their blemishes and worse passed over in silence.

When it comes to materialism, India leads the United States by miles. Indian brides are still mistreated or even murdered when their dowries are deemed too small. A leading Indian businessman says that anyone who is serious about doing business in India has to be prepared to pay dozens of bribes to corrupt officials.

In 1857 the Supreme Court of the United States of America in the case of Scott v. Sanford decided that Dred Scott should remain a slave, that as a slave he was not a citizen of the U.S. and thus not eligible to bring suit in a federal court, and that as a slave he was personal property and thus had never been free.

In 1927 the same court said in the case of Buck v Bell "We have seen more than once that the public welfare may call upon the best citizens for their lives. It would be strange if it could not call upon those who already sap the strength of the State for these lesser sacrifices, often not felt to be such by those concerned, in order to prevent our being swamped with incompetence. It is better for all the world, if instead of waiting to execute degenerate offspring for crime, or to let them starve for their imbecility, society can prevent those who are manifestly unfit from continuing their kind. The principle that sustains compulsory vaccination is broad enough to cover cutting the Fallopian tubes ... Three generations of imbeciles are enough."

Just this month the State of Virginia finally apologised to the tens of thousands of "imbeciles" sterilised under this Supreme Court decision between 1927 and 1972.

Get No Credit - The purposes of Propaganda

It is sad but true that America has never gotten much credit for what it actually does for the Palestinians. For half a century, we have provided a plurality of the funding to the United Nation's Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) for Palestinians. For nearly as long, we have led international efforts to advance the Middle East peace process. President Clinton personally oversaw the intensive negotiations that followed the 1993 Oslo agreement and the creation of the Palestinian Authority. He devoted two weeks, moreover, of his waning presidency to sketching out and attempting to cajole the parties to endorse the outline of an imaginative agreement—only to have Yasir Arafat refuse even to accept it as a basis for discussion. And we rarely hear of U. S. efforts to succor Muslims in Kuwait, Somalia, Bosnia, and Kosovo.

Yet once, when I appealed to Saudi foreign minister Prince Sa‘ud to give more assistance to UNRWA, he replied: "You Americans created the refugee problem. You solve it." In response, I asked if he could imagine, had a catastrophe driven half a million Canadians into North Dakota, Idaho, and Minnesota, that three generations later, those populations would still be held in refugee camps? How differently the half-million Jews driven from Arab lands in 1948 were received by Israel, compared to how the half-million Arabs driven from Palestine that same year were received by their Arab neighbors.

The truth is that for Arab governments, the Palestinian issue is—among other things—a convenient tactic. By "waving the bloody flag," Arab governments can distract their subjects from misrule, oppression, and misery at home. In particular, Palestinians' grievances against Israel have their match in the half-century of neglect and oppression they have endured from supposedly "brother" Arab regimes.

THE COMING TRADE WAR
Trade in the age of overcapacity

July 8/05 - The [so-called] neo-conservatives in the current US administration, while aggressively militant toward China on security issues, are solidly in bed with the neo-liberals in the US business community with regard to trade with China. 


The fact is that in a world of sovereign states, all economies are command economies.
The United States, the mecca of market fundamentalism, commands its alleged market economy in the name of national security. While the US tirelessly advocates free trade, foreign trade is a declared instrument of US foreign policy [at least when the trade applies to Global Multinational Corporations]. President George W Bush declares that "open trade is a moral imperative" to spread democracy around the world. The White House Council of Economic Advisers is organizationally subservient to the National Security Council. National-security concerns dictate trade policies the US adopts for its economic relations with different foreign countries. World trade today is free only to the extent of being free to support US unilateralism. For the US imperium, the line between foreign policy and domestic policy is disappearing to make room for global policy. The sole superpower views the world as its oyster, and global trade is to replace foreign trade in a global economy the rules for which are set by a World Trade Organization dominated by the sole superpower.

Hague v. C.I.O., 307 U.S. 496 (1939).
The United States Supreme Court held that citizens have a "guaranteed access" to streets, parks, and other "traditional public forum." The privilege to use the streets and parks for communication of views may be regulated in the best interests of all, but it must not, under the guise of regulation, be abridged or denied. Mere inconvenience to the government will not outweigh free speech interests. The government must use the least restrictive means of achieving legitimate, content neutral objectives. 


Schneider v. State, 308 U.S. 147 (1939). The United States Supreme Court did not allow cities to completely forbid leaflet distribution in order to prevent littering. The objective of keeping the streets clean does not outweigh the right to distribute literature in public. 


Freedman v. Maryland, 380 U.S. 51 (1965). Public officials may not be given overly broad discretion to grant or deny permits or licenses for free speech. 

Cantwell v. Connecticut, 310 U.S. 296 (1940). Speech may not be prohibited merely because it offends some listeners. 

Kunz v. New York, 340 U.S. 290 (1951). The United States Supreme Court did not allow a permit to include any restrictions on a speaker's right of free expression. Permits may not be used as a prior restraint on free speech activities. Inappropriate or illegal activities may only be punished after they have occurred. 

Forsyth County v. The Nationalist Movement, 112 S.Ct. 2395 (1992). A city may not consider the listeners' reaction to a speaker when permitting free speech activities. 

Cox v. Louisiana, 379 U.S. 536 (1965). Hecklers may not be allowed to veto a speaker's right of free speech. Police must control a crowd rather than arrest the speaker in order to maintain order. Regulations may be imposed on free speech to control traffic flow. 

Gregory v. City of Chicago, 394 U.S. 111 (1969). Peaceful marching, chanting, and singing is protected by the First Amendment. 

Grayned v. Rockford, 408 U.S. 104 (1972)
. Free speech expression may be regulated for noise content in appropriate places such as hospitals or schools while classes are in session. The general test is to ask whether the expressive activity is basically incompatible with the normal activities of a particular place at a particular time. Unamplified speech is permissible for "street preachers" on public streets.

We are against large Multinational corporations that harm the people, impovrish countries, and destroy the middle classes. Our point of view is in believing in the Average American, and in the Integrity of the American Worker. There is no "one piece" of legislation that can be opposed. Most of them have to be opposed and to be opposed continuously. It is a long process. But liberty - a small amount of it - is all that remains with which to fight. If we do not use it to stand up, there will soon be no liberty left, and no country either.
