These are old books, and pretty rare. They could have been sold for a lot more. Why are your books so cheap ?
- Because we want to encourage laymen and scholars to learn more about the languages & cultures that they are studying. We will be increasing these prices, but wanted to offer them - initially - at a lower price to help a few more.
What is the main value of these Older books ?
- Over time, language changes. These books help explain and illustrate the changes that have taken place over the centuries. They also help answer questions about the meaning that particular words used to have in the 1600s and 1700s.
Meanings of words can change, and we want to make sure that those interested in older books and Bible versions are able to find and use the works that defined words (their meaning and their use)...at the time that the Bible was being translated from Greek and Hebrew into Spanish.
Spain has different dialects, depending on the particular area, or on the ancient kingdom or province that one came from. The interaction between the older Spanish dialects also affected the translators of the 1600s & 1700s and their work.
Have you taken other steps to try to reduce costs in order to keep the books available to laymen ?
These books are offered in Paperback only. Those who want to pay the extra costs for the hardback binding are free to have these books hardbound at their own discretion.

Here is an update on what we have. We have somewhere around 80 Bibles that are either Spanish or spanish related - that are from editions of the Bible in Spanish prior to 1875.
There are some differences between older Protestant Versions of the Bible and
Roman Catholic versions.
Protestant versions do have textual changes, but there are reasons for the changes. There is a logic which is derived from the
New or Old Testament itself...that forms the basis for what a persons sees on the page.
The changes are noted in the works of scholars. They are documented and there is much commentary and scholarly explanations available.
Most of the older (pre-1900) versions of the Roman Catholic Bibles contradict one another. The versions of the Latin Vulgate can be compared to each other: there are verses missing, and words missing, from one edition to the next, without explanations, without reasons. The main reason is that the publishers did not care enough to check for accuracy. What that means is that those who rely on Roman Catholic Bibles are likely to be mis-led, not fully aware of what their own Bibles say and how those bibles differ often Both from the Ancient Manuscripts of the New Testament in Greek, AND how their understanding of the words of Jesus and the teachings of the Bible can change, from one Latin Vulgate edition to the next.
Roman Catholic versions have very little textual procedures for accuracy. Most of their versions depend
on the Pope who happens to be in charge.
The RCC (Roman Catholic Church) versions also take into considerations the various factions
within Roman Catholicism, the Jesuits versus the Benedictines versus the Capuchins, versus Fransiscans, etc. And most of the versions of the Bible that were printed by the Roman Catholic Church were accomplished by officials who were involved in the oppression of others through the inquisition, usually directly.
(We offer some books on the Inquisition on our website at:
http://www.exorthodoxforchrist.com/catholicism_books.htm
) and other places on those bookpages.
The evidence of the lack of care in Roman Catholic older Bibles has great
implications - as those issues come up in the process of making decisions, decisions about which manuscripts to use, which to quote, which to verify, which authors to depend on, etc. The interesting point is that the Roman Catholic Church officials who attempt to either develop serious textual rules for the Bible and Bible Translations - become Protestant.
This is how Reina and Valera became Protestants. It is how Erasmus became Protestant in theology (though staying within the Roman Catholic
label hoping the Pope would reform the Roman Catholic Church from its abuses), and
study of the Bible is how Martin Luther became a Protestant, not to mention
even Calvin, Bible translators., linguists and students who also started out as Roman Catholics. Many
of them did not think of themselves as Protestants, but simply as serious
students of Christianity and of the Bible. Many of them were either
priests or members of Religious Orders within the Roman Catholic Church. They
became protestants when the Roman Catholic Church officials had problems with
them, because the Vatican officials had no intention of changing or
reforming.
We have access to most of The Roman Catholic versions. Most that we have are in Latin (Latin Vulgate) or Latin and another language or Latin & Spanish. Almost all Roman Catholic Bibles are derived from the Latin Vulgate.
We use these for our own study of the Bible and Christianity.
But there is a great variety within the Latin Vulgate, so much that several editions simply included or omitted verses as their editors arbitrarily decided. The point to note is that while Protestant versions usually have textual uniformity within their linguistic families, the Roman Catholic versions are noted for their Absence of uniformity within those same linguistic families. (In other words, the Roman Catholic translators and publishers cared far less about the actual words used).
Sometimes, it almost seems as though the Roman Catholic leaders care more about
the Words of a Pope than they do about the words of Jesus Christ in the Bible.
About the so-called Escorial Bible.
We did not say anything earlier because we wanted to double check. But the Escorial Bible is not actually
actually a Bible.
Escorial refers to the monastery where the Escorial Manuscripts were housed. The Monastery
(more particularly the Land on which the
Monastery was built, and the outer walls are the last remnants of what it used
be) lasted off-and-on for more than a thousand years, but fell into disuse for decades, before it was reclaimed by monks in the 1800s who tried to resurrect it...slightly.
The manuscripts that were stored there are called Escorial
Manuscripts, but a great many of them come from the time of the
Inquisition in the 1500s & 1600s. The inquisition did prosper greatly, and they did persecute and murder
innocent and peaceful non-catholics (this finishing only in the 1860s).
But their policies on books were much more
lenient (than in some of the other nations where the Inquisition ruled). One of the main reasons is that the inquisition in spain
usually took much longer to make up its mind, than they did in other countries.
Other nations and their inquisitions made up their minds to persecute dissent
and Freedom-of-Speech quickly. The spaniards, did not like to be rushed. And this gave the translators and Bible transcribers a good amount of time to get away and to take their
work with them.
As a result, a modern audience has many variations and levels of work, on translations at the various stages of translation that the spaniards had to work through.
As a rule, when someone asks about an Escorial
Bible, they are actually referring to one particular manuscript. This is called:
Biblia latina romanceada prealfonsina (Esc. I.I.8)
But to imply that this one is a Bible is not totally accurate, as there are
Many
Escorial Manuscripts that contain portions of the Bible.
They are interestingly linguistically, but not so much for their Bible
content (and they mostly contain copies of corrupted Latin Vulgate
verses).
We do not presently carry the so-called Escorial
Bible. Its title was designated by only
One "scholar", a secular academic, and we have seen no follow-up on this - to substantiate the claim.
There are Many other Escorial Manuscripts;
they number above thirty thousand. There are many hundreds of works written in spanish from the 1100s to the 1300s, that are very rich linguistically that are not related to Escorial Manuscripts.

Why should I buy these books ? After all, you distribute mainly older books, and we have newer information today.
It might seem that way. But not really. Sometimes people think that the books which are written more recently are those which are more accurate. But that is less and less the case.
In fact, that is not the case at all. The books that we distribute are those which are written by eyewitnesses to the events recounted. Our understanding today of some of those historical events - is often diminished because we don't know Enough of the circumstances of that day & time, to understand the CONTEXT within which those events occurred. But an eyewitness account usually discusses and addresses most of the major events that have an impact on the story being shared with us.
For example, if you were alive in the time of some of the Early Church Fathers, it would be easier to explain some of the ideas & debates of the time, than attempting to explain it now.
It is much easier for an eyewitness to know what to include (since they were there, & writing at that time period) - than it is for us coming in several centuries later...to try to reconstruct what took place.
Another problem with modern authors is that they do not read the old languages that the people they discuss were speaking. So today's "new books" are limited in having to use second-hand sources for their own "new books". Old authors wrote in Spanish, or Latin, or Greek. But since even most modern authors today do not know those languages, they cannot read the firsthand books that those people wrote.
However, Biographers of 200 years ago ( and earlier) COULD read those old languages. So the biographies of the earlier time periods tend to be much more accurate and in-depth than the new books coming out today.
Most "Modern" Books today have become extremely narrow (narrow) in their topic. The problem is that we could be learning about many other parts of life and society - at the same time - but this information is kept out of modern books (not by malice, but by neglect). Older books naturally incorporated that into the fabric of the book, because they saw life as something which was lived more within their own context. So older books give us a broader view of the heroes & examples we are trying to learn from.
Older books are also usually more effective learning tools. Today's books often discuss a biography of a person, while leaving out the details of the theology that the person was advocating. The Older books usually incorporate this and the details, so that anyone reading the book also gains some theological history and roots - through reading, in a way that has almost become lost these days. Reading older books is another way to reconnect with our past, to find authentic Christianity, and to gain the roots that many of us have lost.
